LN: Czech military eyes U.S. Black Hawk helicopters

?TK |

28 November 2012

Prague, Nov 27 (CTK) - The Czech military is interested in the purchase of the U.S. Black Hawk helicopters that are to replace its mostly Soviet-made machines, daily Lidove noviny (LN) writes yesterday.

The maintenance costs of the helicopters used by the Czech military are too high, this is the reason for the new plan, LN writes.

"We will opt for smaller, multipurpose machines to be used for the transportation of the wounded and a small number of people as well as fulfilment of supportive tasks including fire," Czech chief of staff Petr Pavel is quoted as saying.

This can be offered by the U.S. Black Hawk, that "acted" in the film Black Hawk Down (2001), LN writes.

The military has admitted that it likes the helicopters, but a final response will only be given by a tender that must be put up by the defence ministry, it adds.

The Sikorsky UN-60 Black Hawk had its maiden flight in 1979 and it is the backbone of a number of militaries in many countries, including the USA, Japan and Turkey. Austria, too, uses it, LN writes.

The deal will be worth three to five billion crowns, for which the Czech military may acquire 20-30 helicopters, it adds.

Black Hawk's chances are increased by their cockpits being assembled by the Czech Aero Vodochody manufacturer, LN writes.

As a result, the deal would help the Czech industry, it adds.

Helplessness, this is the word best describing the state of the helicopter force now, LN writes.

"We do not have old machines, but the military simply refuses to invest anything in them," a military engineer is quoted as saying.

"We are able to do minor repairs, but if something bigger or an overhaul are needed, we simply drop it," he added.

The military will gradually decommission the squadron of MI-24/35 helicopters. Their fate is clear. The machines will be sold, LN writes.

The military does not have the money to invest tens of million crowns in costly overhauls, Pavel said.

The military command is of the view that the purchase of the new helicopters will materialise in 2015-2017, when the life span of most current helicopters expires, LN writes.

"It is reasonable to buy new helicopters. Old machines may have wonderful prices, but as soon as the first repair is needed, the costs rise dramatically," Pavel is quoted as saying.

The intention to acquire new helicopters was confirmed by former deputy defence minister and current Czech ambassador to NATO Jiri Sedivy a couple of months ago, LN writes.

"In the long run, the military will prefer the transition to the platform of some of the Western manufacturers," Sedivy has told the paper.

Now the military is planning to have a single type of helicopters, it adds.

"If helicopters are really needed, they should be able to fulfil a variety of tasks," Pavel said.

FDA approves Exelixis' cabozantinib for thyroid cancer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved Exelixis Inc's cabozantinib as a treatment for medullary thyroid cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

Cabozantinib, the company's lead product candidate, is an oral drug designed to limit blood supply to tumors as well as block two segments of a pathway used by cancer cells to grow and spread.

The FDA announcement came shortly after the close of stock market trading in New York, where Exelixis shares eased slightly on the day at $5.24 per share.

The regulatory agency noted that cabozantinib is the second drug approved to treat medullary thyroid cancer in the past two years. The other drug, Caprelsa, is marketed by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.

Medullary thyroid cancer, which is rare and difficult to treat, develops in cells that make a hormone called calcitonin, which helps maintain a healthy level of calcium in the blood. It can occur spontaneously or in families that are genetically prone.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that 56,460 Americans will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer and 1,780 will die from the disease in 2012. About 4 percent of thyroid cancers are medullary thyroid cancer.

The FDA completed its review of cabozantinib in six months under the agency's priority review program.

San Francisco-based Exelixis is also studying the drug as a treatment for a number of different tumor types, including prostate cancer.

Oops! Facebook admits to adding users to groups they left

A software glitch caused many Facebook users to find themselves members of old groups, ones they may have left a long time ago. More uncomfortably, some people were suddenly members of groups they'd even?been kicked out of. Facebook issued a statement confirming the details.

"A bug surfaced last night that caused some users to be re-added to groups that they previously belonged to," a Facebook spokesperson told NBC News. "We are working to resolve the issue now. In the meantime, we are rolling out a short-term fix for all closed groups that will make the content of those groups inaccessible to the re-added members."

At first, this bug may seem like an annoyance, leading to little more than?a pile of unwanted?notifications?? that's what we saw firsthand. However,?there could be some pretty nasty side-effects. Before Facebook issued that short-term fix, individuals who were added to closed (or "secret") groups were able to view all the non-public content in those groups as well as the current membership rosters. This could leave some sensitive posts vulnerable (though you really shouldn't be posting anything of that nature on Facebook in the first place, whether publicly or privately).

Even public groups (or closed groups which have been turned public since a user left them) can cause issues, as their membership rosters are now visible to everyone.

"I guess you now know that I belonged to a 'Flava of Love' group," Alberto Lima, a blogger for Noisecast,?wrote in a Facebook message alerting me of the glitch. "I swear I never watched the show!" Sure, Alberto. Sure.

PFT: Eagles cut Babin | Where will he land?

Jed Collins, NaVorro BowmanAP

At a time when few young players are signing long-term deals, 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman has decided to take the money and run ? before he can?t run anymore.

Per a league source, the deal that Bowman accepted includes less than $8 million in fully-guaranteed money, via a $7.5 million signing bonus and the balance of his $540,000 base salary for 2012.? But the deal contains millions more in salary guaranteed for injury only, for now.

In 2013, a $4 million option bonus is due to Bowman; it?s fully guaranteed for now.? Ditto for Bowman?s $630,000 base salary in 2013.? The salary becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the 2013 league year.

In 2014, Bowman has a $4 million base salary, which is guaranted for injury, for now.? It becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the 2014 league year.? He also can earn per-game active roster bonuses that total, if all earned, $750,000.

In 2015, Bowman?s base salary is $4.7 million.? Again, it?s guaranteed for now for injury only.? It becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the 2015 league year.? Bowman also has the per-game roster bonuses that total $750,000.

In 2016, the base salary is $5.85 million.? $4.17 million of it is guaranteed for injury only for now; it becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the 2016 league year.? Bowman once again has the per-game roster bonuses that total $750,000.

In 2017, Bowman?s base salary is $6.75 million, non-guaranteed, with the per-game roster bonuses that total $750,000.

In 2018, the salary pushes to $8.7 million, with the per-game roster bonuses that total $750,000.

Given the free-agent market for linebackers (it?s nearly as soft as the veteran running back market) and the ever-present injury risk for a young player making minimum salaries, it makes sense for Bowman to take an offer that, in reality, he couldn?t have refused.

Cee Lo, Muppets have Christmas spirit in video

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Cee Lo Green. Muppets. What more do you need? Well, according to "The Voice" coach and musician, "All I Need Is Love," the title track to the awesome music video in which he stars alongside everyone's favorite cloth creatures.

The video, which popped up Monday on YouTube via PitchforkTV, features Cee Lo pulling up in front of the Muppet house (dressed in an odd, if festive, red pleather coat) after getting lost on his way to an Atlanta Christmas party. Naturally, the Muppets invite him in and chaos (including flying fish and the appearance of Santa, played by "The Office's" Chris Robinson) ensues. Other things to look for include:

  • a smartphone Kermit case held by Walter (of last year's "The Muppets")
  • the Muppets' "Mahna Mahna" tune sampled in
  • a Muppet of Cee Lo himself
  • a possible recreation of the Last Supper in one scene (suggested by Lee Mills at MySpace)

It's a ripping good nearly seven minutes (be sure to stick around for the credits, with more Muppet mania), and just the way to kick off the holiday season. (And for those who want the song all by itself, it's from Green's "Cee Lo's Magic Moment" Christmas album.)

The Note's Must-Reads for Tuesday, November 27, 2012

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News' Jayce Henderson, Amanda VanAllen and Carrie Halperin

GOP ABC News' Michael Falcone and Amy Walter: " Cracks In The Conservative Armor" So much for pledges? As lawmakers return to Washington today, the deadline to put on the brakes before the country plunges off the fiscal cliff is now in sight, and it appears that both sides are open to some wheeling and dealing. LINK

SPENDING The New York Times' Robert Pear: " Efforts to Curb Social Spending Face Resistance" President Obama's re-election and Democratic gains in Congress were supposed to make it easier for the party to strike a deal with Republicans to resolve the year-end fiscal crisis by providing new leverage. But they could also make it harder as empowered Democrats, including some elected on liberal platforms, resist significant changes in entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. LINK

TAXES The Hills' Amie Parnes, Erik Wasson and Russell Berman: " Obama tries to corner GOP over tax rates for the middle class" President Obama and Democrats are trying to back the GOP into a corner over tax hikes just as they did on the payroll tax fight a year ago. The president and his party are arguing that Republicans should agree to extend the George W. Bush-era tax rates immediately on families earning up to $250,000 a year, and not dig in their heels to prevent rates from rising for higher-income earners. LINK

FISCAL CLIFF The Los Angeles Times' Christi Parsons: "White House not yet ready to declare a 'fiscal cliff' impasse" Aides to President Obama say it's way too early to declare an "impasse" in the talks to avert the fiscal cliff, a word that cropped up Monday on Capitol Hill. "We remain confident we can achieve an agreement," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said. LINK

The Washington Times' Dave Boyer: "' Fiscal cliff' negotiations stall - again - on question of raising tax rates" he talks between President Obama and congressional Republicans to avoid looming tax hikes and steep spending cuts regressed Monday to the same old sticking point - raising taxes on wealthier Americans. Although both sides had expressed optimism before Thanksgiving that they would reach a deal to prevent a serious blow to the economy in January, the post-holiday pronouncements from the White House showed a re-emphasis on the president's position that tax rates must rise for families earning more than $250,000 per year. LINK

Bloomberg's Richard Rubin and Heidi Przybyla: " Fiscal Cliff Compromise Elusive as Congress Returns" Republicans' post-election rhetorical openness to higher taxes comes with a price that neither side of the fiscal debate in Washington may be willing to pay. To get a deal with Democrats, Republicans would have to turn their talk of higher revenue into a vote that may split the party. And to transform Republicans' talk into action, Democrats would need to accept deeper cuts to entitlement programs such as Medicare and Medicaid than they're willing to countenance. LINK The Washington Post's Zachary Goldfarb and Lori Montgomery: " On 'fiscal cliff,' both sides lay groundwork for debate's next phase" Private talks between President Obama and top congressional leaders in search of a deal to avoid the year-end "fiscal cliff" are accelerating, officials said Monday, even as the president began ramping up pressure on Republicans to extend tax cuts for the middle class. Obama telephoned House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) over the weekend, in a sign that high-level negotiations are advancing with only weeks to go before an automatic series of spending cuts and tax hikes starts to hit nearly every American. LINK

OTHER Politico's Manu Raju: " Retirement watch: Will they stay or will they go?" Jay Rockefeller won't talk about it. Neither will fellow Democrats Tom Harkin, Carl Levin, Tim Johnson and Frank Lautenberg. None of these senior senators will give a definitive answer about whether they're running for reelection in 2014. LINK

Top Signs of Foundation Trouble | Home and Garden

Homeowners know that a home is a major investment and that taking care of the home is very important not only to protect that investment but also to ensure a safe place for you and your family to live in. One of the most important aspects of taking care of any home is making sure that the home rests on a solid foundation. As such, it is important to be aware of possible foundation problems and to ensure that you monitor for problems and call in a professional as soon as you see a possible issue.

Signs of Foundation Trouble

Sometimes, a foundation problem is obvious such as when a large crack develops in the walls of your basement. However, there can also be other signs that your foundation is having issues that may not be as obvious. Knowing what to look for is important, and here are a few signs of trouble with your foundation that you should be aware of and pay attention to:

1. Sloping or uneven floors in the basement. This can be a sign that the walls and basement floor are starting to separate or pull away from each other. It is a serious issue and one you should deal with promptly by calling in a foundation repair expert.

2. Cracks or shifts in your crown molding. Crown molding is molding between your sealing and your wall. If your crown molding begins to pull away at the sides (i.e. in corners or where two pieces meet) this is a sign that your home is shifting and your foundation might be in trouble. This is especially true if the crack begins in the wall and continues up into the molding.

3. Cracks or gaps between the walls and ceiling. If your home does not have crown molding, then you may notice gaps developing between the wall and ceiling. This, too, is a sign that the foundation of your home is shifting and that your foundation needs attention.

4. Cracks on your home?s exterior in the brickwork, or the walls separating form your home. This is an extremely serious sign of foundation problems and it means that you must contact an expert right away to preserve the structural integrity of your home.

5. Separation at the windows, doors or garage door. Essentially, like most of the other signs, shifting and pulling away of parts of your home that used to be tight are all indicators that your home?s foundation is beginning to develop problems.

6. Inability to tightly or properly close windows and doors. If your foundation begins to sink, door frames may begin to sag and you may be unable to properly open or close doors. Likewise, a sagging or shifting foundation can cause your windows and doors to become out-of-square and more difficult to open or close.

If you begin to notice any of these issues with your foundation, it is very important that you contact an expert. The longer you wait, the worse the problems in your home may become and the more expensive it may be to fix all of the issues that have developed due to your sagging, shifting or damaged foundation. Don?t hesitate to take action. With the right expert, you may be able to find a simple and easy solution to your foundation issues.

The current console generation is probably the longest we have ever seen: the Xbox 360 has been out for seven years now, with no real announcement for its successor. Ubisoft head Yves Guillemont believes that this generation has lasted way too long and it?s time new consoles are released on the market.

Console generations usually lasted for 5 years, with the last year of the cycle being really slow from a sales and developing point of view: developers are more inclined in producing new IPs and experimenting on new hardware rather than taking a risk and making totally new games for an old hardware. When a new console is released it?s mostly bought by the hardcore gamers who want to try new gaming experiences, making experimenting way more worthwhile: after some time casual gamers will start buying the new hardware to get a taste of that same new gaming experience, resulting in good sales even for new IPs. The prolonged current generation has caused big losses for the developers and that?s why they?re trying to push new business models and digital distribuition to not loose too much: it?s still not the ideal situation because developers are really holding back their projects and this can?t be good for the industry on the whole.

Mister Guillemot isn?t the only one who?s asking for new consoles: it?s probably time for Sony and Microsoft to show them to the world.

Zettel edges teammate Schild to win slalom race

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ? Kathrin Zettel of Austria held off teammate and training partner Marlies Schild with a blazing final run to win a World Cup slalom Sunday.

Zettel finished in a combined time of 1 minute, 42.46 seconds to edge Schild by 0.67 seconds. Tina Maze of Slovenia was third in a race Lindsey Vonn skipped as she recovers from an intestinal illness.

Teenager Mikaela Shiffrin of the U.S. was in the lead for a few skiers before winding up seventh. Shiffrin was third at the last slalom event in Levi, Finland, a competition won by Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany.

Hoefl-Riesch was questionable for this race after bruising her left arm when she crashed Saturday. She recovered enough to not only race Sunday, but race well, taking fourth.

Cell biology: Calcium 'accelerator' keeps cell power supply going

ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2012) ? A team of scientists from Temple University School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania has moved another step closer to solving a decades-long mystery of how the all-important flow of calcium into the cell's power source, the mitochondria, is controlled.

By painstakingly shutting down the activity of 50 genes, one at a time, they have identified a protein, MCUR1, which hugs the inside of the mitochondrial membrane and is part of an elaborate mitochondrial channel pore system. MCUR1 acts as an accelerator to help regulate calcium coming into the mitochondria from the cell's large reservoir.

The results, appearing November 25, 2012 in an advance online issue of the journal Nature Cell Biology, may also point to new treatment opportunities. Understanding how to manipulate MCUR1 may help in the development of treatments for disease conditions involving excessive calcium in the cell, such as cardiovascular disease and stroke.

"Calcium is a key to regulate many fundamental processes in cells," said co-senior author Muniswamy Madesh, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at Temple University School of Medicine and a member of Temple's Center for Translational Medicine. "Excessive calcium in the cell's mitochondria could lead to heart and neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death. This pathway could be contributing to disease conditions during ischemia/reperfusion injury and stroke, and this discovery opens up possible therapeutic interventions."

Maintaining calcium at an appropriate level is crucial for cells to work properly, and especially important in the mitochondria. Cells rely on mitochondria to generate usable energy in the form of the chemical ATP, which is necessary to carry out normal cellular and metabolic activities. ATP production in turn depends on calcium -- more specifically, charged calcium ions -- that can enter into the mitochondria from the cell's vast supply in the cytoplasm. Dr. Madesh, co-senior author Kevin Foskett, PhD, at the University of Pennsylvania, and their co-investigators recently described the role of a gatekeeper protein in maintaining a calcium "set point" under normal resting conditions in the mitochondria. But a long unanswered question remained: the details of how calcium entry into the mitochondria is controlled.

How MCUR1 Dictates Calcium Load

In the current study, Drs. Madesh and Foskett and their co-workers may have come closer to solving this puzzle. Dr. Madesh and his group sought to identify the genes involved in the flow of calcium into the mitochondria. They developed a way to use a technology called targeted RNA interference (RNAi) to screen 50 mitochondrial proteins, systematically testing whether eliminating the function of each of these genes individually altered the movement of calcium into the mitochondria. They found a mitochondrial inner membrane protein -- MCUR1 -- that regulates a calcium channel pore during active calcium uptake.

MCUR1 is part of a calcium channel pore called the uniporter, the existence of which has been known for some five decades. Recent studies identified two important pieces of the pore -- a subunit protein, MCU, and the gatekeeper protein, MICU1, to maintain calcium levels at a resting, set point. The researchers found that MCUR1 interacts with MCU to accelerate the movement of calcium into mitochondria when the cell's calcium level rapidly rises.

"MCUR1 is an essential third component of the uniporter complex," Dr. Madesh said. "In the absence of MCUR1, mitochondrial calcium uptake is markedly reduced, with adverse cellular consequences, including compromised cellular bioenergetics."

Without this accelerator, the mitochondria channel pore alone cannot take up calcium. When MCUR1 is physically attached to the pore, it is functional, and when it is not attached, it is much less active. "The regulator is always on, and its activity level increases when the extra-mitochondrial calcium levels increase. When there is a high calcium level, say during a disease state, the MCUR1 senses this and facilitates the channel activity, dumping calcium inside," Dr. Madesh explained.

Calcium Control as a Targeted Therapeutic

Dr. Madesh explained that in some disease conditions -- such as ischemic reperfusion injury (tissue damage that occurs when blood returns to tissue after a period without oxygen), stroke involving brain injury from ischemia, and myocardial infarction -- calcium floods into the mitochondria. "The mitochondria have a massive membrane potential and grab external calcium. The mitochondria then are overloaded and rupture, leading to cell death and possible organ injury."

Because some diseases are characterized by an overabundance of calcium in the mitochondria, a possible therapy could involve slowing down the amount of calcium coming into the mitochondria. "We want to control the calcium entering the mitochondria," he said.

"Further studies already underway should reveal the precise molecular mechanisms by which MCUR1 accelerates the channel pore MCU, providing insights into mitochondrial bioenergetics," said first author Karthik Mallilankaraman, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and the Center for Translational Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine.

PFT: Seattle CBs facing suspensions for PEDs

New York Giants quarterback Manning passes under pressure by the Green Bay Packers during the first quarter of their NFL football game in East RutherfordReuters

The arm looked rested.

So did the legs.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning bounced back from a rough stretch before the bye, but the truth is, he wasn?t all that different than he always has been.

He?s always been pretty good, even if he hasn?t been as well-regarded as others.

Manning led the Giants to a clean and thorough 38-10 thrashing of the Packers, to improve to 7-4 on the season.

He was 16-of-30 passing for 249 yards and three touchdowns, and showed some nerve (if not excellent judgement) by rushing for a first down early, and not sliding.

It was the kind of night he needed after a rough stretch before the bye. He used the time off to rest his arm (which, for the record, seemed fine) and clear his head by watching classing movies, such as ?Road House.? Like Patrick Swayze?s character Dalton, who people constantly underestimate by saying ?I thought you?d be bigger,? Manning?s had a harder time fighting perceptions than opposing defenses.

Manning threw his 200th career touchdown pass in the third quarter, passing Phil Simms for most in Giants franchise history. Simms can parse it however he chooses, the guy who spent his career being the little brother is elite.

And if he?s not, it?s the definition of the word that needs a second look.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1. As long as Aaron Rodgers is your quarterback, there?s a ceiling on how often you want the ball out of his hands.

But there?s a difference between not wanting to run and not being able to. The Packers are stuck on not being able to.

Having a philosophy is fine. But there will be nights when good teams can game-plan your strengths out of your hands, and you have to have a Plan B. The Packers Plan B is simply ?throw some more? and that didn?t get them anywhere.

2. Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell has interviewed for head coaching jobs before.

He will again, and the Giants better enjoy him while they can.

Fewell (who was the runner-up to Ron Rivera for the Carolina job two years ago, and might have another chance soon) had the Giants defense humming after the bye week, constantly throwing new looks at the Packers.

He opened the game in a three-safety set, with the return of Kenny Phillips. That Stevie Brown had played well in Phillips? absence made it reasonable, but they weren?t through tweaking. At one point, they threw safety Will Hill out there with Phillips, Brown and Antrel Rolle.

Coupled with the sheer talent they have up front, that gives Fewell the ability to tinker, and he?s proving he knows how to move the pieces around.

Phillips wasn?t able to finish the game with a knee injury, so Fewell?s ability to improvise will be tested again. He?s up to it.

3. In the third quarter, the Giants dropped Rodgers for the 36th time this season.

That?s the same number he absorbed last season, and there are five more games left to play.

The Packers line has been a hash all year, but losing right tackle Bryan Bulaga might have been a last-straw situation, putting multiple guys in bad positions.

In addition to getting some guys well, the Packers need to invest in blockers this offseason, which could add some balance to the offense as well as keeping Rodgers on his feet if he?s going to throw on practically every play.

4. Maybe practice is overrated.

Ahmad Bradshaw, who basically shows up for work on Sunday, ran well Sunday night. Taking the screen pass 59 yards early was one thing, but the burst he showed on his 13-yard touchdown run made him look like a guy who was tired of losing short-yardage carries to Andre Brown.

Bradshaw?s foot issues have obviously robbed him of some of his burst, but he can still get the job done, thanks in part to the fact they?re willing to use him smartly.

5. Perhaps Packers coach Mike McCarthy was giving his kicker a chance to hit a home run, to regain some confidence.

But letting embattled Mason Crosby try his first one from 55 yards in a stadium not known for its consistent conditions wasn?t the best bet to get him back on tack.

Naturally, Crosby missed.

He entered the game 11-of-18 on field goals this season, having missed five of his previous 10. He came back to hit a 28-yarder, but he?s well off his career pace, and you wonder how many chances he?ll get.

It also gave the Giants a short field, and they scored in a hurry to go up 14-7 in the first quarter, and they never looked back.

How to Make a Good Marriage Better | Gather

?

You know what they say if something is moving along without any major hurdles - ?if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.? But your marriage may not yet have reached its full potential. Believe it or not, you can change boring routines and improve your relationship.

According to the field of interpersonal neurobiology, our brains are constantly changing. And that is impacted by how we interact daily. Loving relationships can alter the brain circuits that shape memories and emotions.

Think about the immediate attraction when you first fell in love. This alchemy continues throughout life, and how we treat each other matters. In a loving relationship we can change neural functions when we decide to be more compassionate. And holding hands is enough to reduce stress and minimize physical pain. So whether you want to release euphoria-inducing chemicals like dopamine or change the wiring in your brain, here are some ideas to consider:

Invest emotionally. Make time for each other and keep romance alive. A gentle touch or quick hug releases oxytocin, a hormone that facilitates bonding. When you're tense, an affectionate moment can help you feel relaxed and more loved. Studies show that celebrating positive events predict greater relationship satisfaction than complaining about negative ones. Just like with any valuable asset, the efforts you make will be returned in multiples.

Eliminate boredom. Lightheartedness is often a casualty of hectic family life and then, when the kids leave home, there?s an even greater void. Talk to your partner about this without being critical. Plan adventures and discover activities you both enjoy. Take on a physical challenge together and train to make it happen. Have fun and laugh - being playful can lead to greater intimacy.

Ask for what you need. No one is a mind reader. Sometimes couples can get frustrated and stop talking. Try to understand each other?s disappointment or resentment. Meet halfway and get more of what you want. If you invest in your own happiness, your partner won?t have to be responsible for your wellbeing. By taking action, you'll feel more confident and your relationship will reap the dividends.

Express gratitude often. Compliments serve as positive reinforcement at the very times when you may be taking each other for granted. If you feel distant, try to see your partner in a different light. Look for the qualities you love about each other. And when you?re having positive thoughts, say them out loud. Being satisfied with small changes can make a good marriage better.

On Webisodes, Mars, The Mayan Apocalypse, Baby Boomers & More!

Remember a few weeks ago (okay, I guess it was more like last month) when I wrote about how I rolled sound and assisted Maryn in producing a webisode about the Blackout Haunted House? Remember? Huh? Huh? Remember when it was running in Los Angeles? Of course you don?t, because you most likely skip all my weekend posts since they?re boring and formulaic. Well, just in case you were wondering where the video went, here it is. Hear how great that sound sounds? That was me! I recorded that sound! Too bad they cut my on-camera interview about how scary/cool the haunted house was. I really thought that might have been my big Hollywood break. Now I?ll never be a movie star!

WIRED Science ran an article this week called, ?Thanksgiving on Mars: What astronauts will feast on in 2030.? Unfortunately, their predictions will not shock and amaze you. ?Snap beans, veggie loaf, stuffing, mashed sweet and white potatoes, pinto bean pie? are the amazing future foods that will be available for a Thanksgiving in outer space. I was hoping NASA would ? over the course of the next eighteen years ? have enough time to create brand new foods that we?ve never even heard of before. That?d make for an interesting Thanksgiving, right? What if we could eat Martian instead of turkey? We?re almost two decades away from the first Thanksgiving on Mars. Surely we should have enough time to find some form of life on the red planet that is also edible and non-poisonous. That would make Thanksgiving on Mars so much more like Thanksgiving on Earth. Here we celebrate displacing and destroying the Native Americans and their culture. On Mars we can just eat tiny microorganisms (or bigger, normal-sized aliens if they can be discovered) and we?ll be reveling in our superiority over another culture yet again! Why aim for pinto bean pie, guys? LET?S EAT SOME FUCKING ALIENS. [story]

Scientists have discovered a gene ?that predicts what time of day we?ll die.? If mine isn?t late at night or really early in the morning, I?m going to be pissed. Those are the two most-likely times I will be engaged in a beautifully disgusting sex act, and if that?s NOT how I?m supposed to die than FUCK YOU, SCIENCE. [story]

Did you know that ?Baby Boomer health trends? exist? CNN and their endless coverage of all things Baby Boomers posted a blog about the top five trends in Baby Boomer health this week. Let me tell you?these trends are startling. First, there?s ?Boomeritis.? It?s like senioritis, but with old people?s bodies. Just kidding. It?s a term that maybe five people in the world use to describe, ?tendinitis, arthritis, tears and fractures.? In other words those stupid, spoiled, self-aggrandizing Baby Boomers are so focused on themselves that they?re actually trying to take medical conditions that already exist and house them under a giant umbrella that?s named after them. Fucking die already. That should be the rest of the trends. Trend 1: Baby Boomers take common words that everyone knows the definitions of and tries to change them to something that?s named after them. Trends 2-5: Baby boomers die. I like the way that sounds. [story]

?Could a sonic weapon make your head explode?? We can only hope. In the interim you could pick a blog entry of mine at random and try to read it. I think either my not drinking or my short temper might be responsible for a decrease in clarity in my writing. Maybe it?s just me?but I feel like nothing I type makes sense anymore. Maybe I?m losing my mind? Maybe someone unleashed a sonic weapon on me? Maybe my brain is about to explode? [story]

This week Live Science posed the question, ?Does anyone really believe in the Mayan apocalypse?? Well, I sure don?t. So I didn?t read the rest of the article. Can someone skim it for me and let me know if there really are any morons out there who believe this shit? [story] [Note: My dear friend Hornet Montana MIGHT believe in the Mayan apocalypse. If that's the case I can't say definitively that EVERYONE who believes in it is a moron. He's definitely not a moron. He just?believes in the Mayan apocalypse. We can't all be perfect.]

Today was the last long-run of my 4-month marathon training program. I run three more times before the race next weekend: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Those runs are 3, 2, and then 2 miles each. Then I?m done. Then I rest up for Sunday. My 8-mile run this morning was finished in 1:03 and change, meaning I ran sub-8 minute miles the whole way. I feel good. I?m all smiles. I?m excited to see just how well I can do one week from tomorrow. Just like last year, I?ll write a wrap-up post detailing my training later this week. Then I?ll share some final thoughts this weekend (including my 2012 marathon mix that I?ll be listening to while I run) and a recap of the race on Monday the 3rd of December. Stay tuned.

Business Travel More Likely To Use Chartered Flights ? hot news

We have all heard about the rich and famous taking flight in their private jet or hiring a private chartered flight to move about from one exciting place to another. Private jets also are frequently used by companies who value their employee?s time and realize the value the private jets provide for themselves as well as the company.

When you sit back and look at the cost of bringing multiple executives and important shareholders and business associates together in one place or taking them all to one location, it makes sense to consider a private jet and a chartered flight. Not only do you get to travel in a more relaxed, private atmosphere; you can actually get something accomplished. If time is money, and everyone knows that it is, then lost time, even while traveling is costing your company money.

The advantages of hiring a private jet might just outweigh the actual cost of the jet expense. There is something to the adage ? time is money. When you factor in the time spent traveling to the nearest airport, waiting to go through security, waiting for flights that are delayed and then multiply that by the hourly wage of each executive traveling, the amount can be staggering. Unproductive time affects the bottom line ? profitability.

Hiring a private jet to transport all the necessary people to a meeting is well worth the cost. The saying, ?You get what you pay for? is true in this scenario. Private jets offer a comfortable atmosphere, privacy, and a no hassle flight allowing your executives to be more prepared to close that all important meeting. No more wondering if their delayed flight gave them enough rest time before the meeting the next morning. Jet lag can pose a problem for many.

There are moments when price cannot dictate as the top priority. Knowing that and implementing what is best for the long run of the company most likely is the reason you?re at the helm of the company. The big picture always needs to be scrutinized to determine what steps need to be taken along the way. Sometimes that step is paying the extra and hiring a chartered private jet.

Using a decent Jet charter is a smart option for any company that needs to get people somewhere as a group. Going with Private Jets Charter will make it a wonderful trip.

Helpful Ideas On Prevention Safe Pest Control In Your Vegetable ...

The presence of pests in the vegetable patch is often due to simple cultivation errors. Making use of a few tricks of the trade during selection and planting will help you to keep your vegetables healthy and save you the trouble of subsequent pest control.

If an insect or disease does get out of hand, treat it effectively without disrupting the other life in your garden, which includes everything from good bugs to birds. Control measures may be as simple as handpicking and squashing snails, or knocking off aphids with a strong jet of water from a hose.

Plants to help one another

Companion planting makes the most of the beneficial effects that plants can have on each other and on pests. Aromatic compounds in roots, leaves and flowers or secretions from parts of some plants can act as effective deterrents to many common pests.

As well as protecting against pests, companion planting results in fewer weeds as deep-rooting plants grow alongside shallow-rooting plants, compact plants with broad leaves alongside thin-leafed plants. This means there is less room for weeds to take hold.

Growing carrots with leeks, garlic or onions is a tried and tested combination, with the companions protecting each other in turn against carrot fly and onion fly.

When planted between strawberries and vegetables, onions and garlic also help to protect against fungal infections. Strong-smelling winter savory protects dwarf beans against blackfly, whereas nasturtiums help to protect tomatoes and fruit trees from greenfly and the woolly apple aphid.

When planted among vegetables, secretions from the roots of pot marigolds (Calendula officinalis) and French marigolds (Tagetes patula) help to deter eelworms.

Planting celery between cabbage plants drives away cabbage white butterflies, so that they look elsewhere for a place to lay their eggs. And the aromatic leaves of sage also deter cabbage white butterfly as well as being offputting to snails and ants.

Often, a pest problem in a garden can be averted before it actually becomes a problem.

Plant your vegetables in the proper locations. Many pests become more troublesome when plants are grown in conditions that are less than ideal. For example, if you grow sun-loving vegetables in the shade, mildew problems are often more severe.

Choose resistant plants. If you know that a certain disease is common in your area, choose plants that aren't susceptible to that disease or that resist infection. Some vegetable varieties are resistant to specific diseases. For example, some tomato varieties resist verticillium, fusarium, and nematodes.

Know the enemy. The more you know about specific pests and diseases common to your area when they occur and how they spread the more easily you can avoid them. For example, some diseases run rampant on wet foliage. If you know that fact, you can reduce the occurrence of these diseases simply by adjusting your watering so you don't wet the plants' leaves or by watering early in the day so the plants dry out quickly.

Keep your plants healthy. Healthy plants are less likely to have problems. Water and fertilize regularly so your plants grow strong and more pest resistant.

Keep your garden clean. By cleaning up spent plants, weeds, and other garden debris, you eliminate hiding places for many pests and diseases.

Encourage and use beneficial insects. Beneficial insects are the good bugs in your garden the insects that feed on the bugs that bother your vegetables. You probably have a bunch of different kinds of beneficial insects in your garden already, but you also can purchase them to release in your garden. In addition, you can plant flowers that attract these insects.

Rotate your plants each year. Avoid planting the same plants in the same location year after year, especially if you grow vegetables in raised beds (any planting area that's raised above the surrounding ground level). Rotation prevents pests and diseases that are specific to certain plants from building up in your garden
