People with Type-II Diabetes May Prevent Aging with Exercise ...

A recent Colorado School of Medicine study indicates that people with type-II diabetes may prevent cardiovascular aging with exercise. Studies have shown that the health of patients with type-II diabetes declines at a faster rate than those without the disease. However, according to this study, exercise may be the solution to preventing the decline in health.

Type-II diabetes is the more common form of diabetes.?For patients with the condition, either their body doesn?t produce enough insulin or their cells ignore the insulin ? which is necessary to break down glucose for energy.?Approximately 26 million people in the United States are diagnosed with diabetes and around 79 million people are estimated to have prediabetes. Unlike other forms of diabetes, type-II diabetes is preventable.

A healthy lifestyle can prevent diabetes, but it can also prevent aging for those who already suffer from the condition. Exercise can help control blood sugar levels and lead to weight loss, which can be very beneficial since?increased body fat makes it harder for the body to use insulin the correct way. However,?for people who are 50 or older,?fitness levels naturally decline over time. This reduction is more pronounced for people with diabetes.

According to the study,?the premature aging caused may be prevented with exercise. Although?exercise alone would not allow patients to reach the same fitness levels of diabetes-free people, patients could use consistent exercise (2.5 hours per week) to?increase their fitness levels by nearly 50 percent over the course of three to five months. This increase is enough to delay the rate that the cardiovascular systems age and could prevent the early onset of heart conditions and even death.

As conditions worsen for patients suffering from type-II diabetes, typically their activity levels decrease as well. It is important to maintain a moderate level of activity, especially since?exercise may benefit diabetic patients far more ever expected before.?The researchers behind the study are encouraging patients with type-II diabetes to get active and start exercising as soon as possible to reduce the impact of the condition on their health.

Honeywell forecasts growth in corporate jet sales

(Reuters) - Demand for corporate jets has begun to recover from a post-recession low and is likely to rise over the next decade, with $250 billion worth of new aircraft delivered by 2022, according to a forecast by Honeywell International Inc .

The forecast projects that companies will increasingly choose larger aircraft capable of traveling longer distances, driven by the desire to use private jets in international travel and to transport larger teams of people, Honeywell said in its forecast, released on Sunday.

The total value of corporate jets delivered worldwide in 2012 will rise 9 percent from 2011, said the diversified U.S. manufacturer, which makes engines used in the aircraft. Major makers of business aircraft include Textron Inc's Cessna, General Dynamics Corp's Gulfstream, Canada's Bombardier Inc , and Brazil's Embraer SA .

Honeywell expects similar growth levels and demand patterns in 2013.

"It's all about range. To have more range you have more fuel, more fuel requires bigger wings, bigger wings mean bigger fuselage," said Rob Wilson, president of Honeywell's business and general aviation operation. "So you will get a larger cabin with the higher range requirements. In addition, when you're going to be on an airplane for 12, 14 hours, you need a certain amount of volume to prevent you from going a little stir-crazy."

A Honeywell survey found that 69 percent of spending on new aircraft in 2012 was for large-cabin jets.

Morris Township, New Jersey-based Honeywell based its forecast on interviews with 1,500 operators of corporate jets, as well as other economic data sources.

BREAKING THE EARNINGS LINK?

Sales of corporate jets have traditionally closely tracked growth in corporate profits -- when times were good, companies invested in aircraft; when conditions worsened, they pulled back. That cycle played out in the last recession, with orders falling sharply in 2008 and 2009, then steadying.

The current wave of third-quarter corporate earnings reports has largely showed a decline in profit among companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx>, with analysts expecting the group's collective earnings to fall 1.9 percent in the quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Wilson, however, argued that with North America representing just 53 percent of expected corporate jet demand over the next five years, the correlation between U.S. corporate profits and jet sales may not be as strong as in prior cycles.

"The linkage to corporate profits may have been more of a hangover from when we saw the market being much more dominated by North American companies," he said. "With that now being half the market, we don't see the linkage being as strong, we see other facets globally that drive it."

Honeywell's survey found growing demand for corporate jets in Asia and Latin America.

Corporate jet makers have suggested in recent weeks that demand could pick up after the November 6 U.S. presidential elections and Congress's year-end "fiscal cliff" deadline passes, as jet buyers will then have a clearer sense of the economy's heading.

"Our primary customers are small, mid-sized businesses. There's no question that a lot of these guys are looking at a very uncertain next few months, right?" Textron Chief Executive Scott Donnelly told investors on an October 17 conference call. "People will wake up the morning after the election, they may be happy, they may be unhappy. But to some degree people are going to have to dust themselves off and say, 'You know what? I've got to get on with my life.' ... It takes some uncertainty off the table and that is probably good for the market."

Quantum Conundrum Creators Bravely Venture Into Mobile Gaming ...

Quantum Conundrum Creators Bravely Venture Into Mobile Gaming with PIXLDQuantum Conundrum's Kim Swift (because I am tired of typing Portal creator) and her team at Airtight Games have undergone a startling epiphany?mobile phones can play games. They've launched Airtight Mobile to take advantage of this discovery, with the first of these "mobile phone games" dropping next week. It's called PIXLD.

From the official announcement press release:

PIXLD is Airtight's first release under the new Airtight Mobile brand, an innovative and unprecedented venture aiming to do the impossible: allow consumers to experience the joys of video gaming on their mobile telephones.

"Seriously, have you seen these things?" said PIXLD creative director Kim Swift, gesturing at Apple's sixth-generation iPhone. "They're like tiny computers. Tiny computers you carry in your pocket. So I'm all like, ?I know this sounds nuts, but guys, let's put some games on there.' And they did. Bam."

Man, if only I had known this sooner I wouldn't have given away my smart phones to the homeless.

PIXLD is a stunningly simple match game in which the player is challenged to make blocks of similar shades of blue. Touching one of the small bits on the screen swaps the color of it and all the bits around it. You can see where that my pose a problem.

"Is it risky betting on an emerging platform like iOS? You bet. But I have a feeling Apple just might be onto something here," added Swift. "Buying a video game that you can play on your phone for less than a cup of coffee? That's just crazy!"

That is kinda crazy. Even crazier is the fact that PIXLD will be released next week on iTunes for the introductory price of $.99?half off of the price you can figure out using math (hint?add a penny to your end result).

We'll have more on PIXLD once we figure out how to put games on our iPhones. What, we just set them on top or something?

Emails: White House told of militant claim two hours after Libya attack

Officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the attack, official emails show.

The emails, obtained by Reuters from government sources not connected with U.S. spy agencies or the State Department and who requested anonymity, specifically mention that the Libyan group called Ansar al-Sharia had asserted responsibility for the attacks.

The brief emails also show how U.S. diplomats described the attack, even as it was still under way, to Washington.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Benghazi assault, which President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials ultimately acknowledged was a "terrorist" attack carried out by militants with suspected links to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathizers.

Documents add to evidence of Libya security fears

Administration spokesmen, including White House spokesman Jay Carney, citing an unclassified assessment prepared by the CIA, maintained for days that the attacks likely were a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film.

While officials did mention the possible involvement of "extremists," they did not lay blame on any specific militant groups or possible links to al Qaeda or its affiliates until intelligence officials publicly alleged that on September 28.

There were indications that extremists with possible al Qaeda connections were involved, but also evidence that the attacks could have erupted spontaneously, they said, adding that government experts wanted to be cautious about pointing fingers prematurely.

U.S. intelligence officials have emphasized since shortly after the attack that early intelligence reporting about the attack was mixed.

Spokesmen for the White House and State Department had no immediate response to requests for comments on the emails.

Missives from Libya
The records obtained by Reuters consist of three emails dispatched by the State Department's Operations Center to multiple government offices, including addresses at the White House, Pentagon, intelligence community and FBI, on the afternoon of September 11.

The first email, timed at 4:05 p.m. Washington time - or 10:05 p.m. Benghazi time, 20-30 minutes after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission allegedly began - carried the subject line "U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi Under Attack" and the notation "SBU", meaning "Sensitive But Unclassified."

The text said the State Department's regional security office had reported that the diplomatic mission in Benghazi was "under attack. Embassy in Tripoli reports approximately 20 armed people fired shots; explosions have been heard as well."

Video: Obama defends Libya reaction (on this page)

The message continued: "Ambassador Stevens, who is currently in Benghazi, and four ... personnel are in the compound safe haven. The 17th of February militia is providing security support."

A second email, headed "Update 1: U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi" and timed 4:54 p.m. Washington time, said that the Embassy in Tripoli had reported that "the firing at the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi had stopped and the compound had been cleared." It said a "response team" was at the site attempting to locate missing personnel.

A third email, also marked SBU and sent at 6:07 p.m. Washington time, carried the subject line: "Update 2: Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibility for Benghazi Attack."

The message reported: "Embassy Tripoli reports the group claimed responsibility on Facebook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli."

Story: Suspected ringleader in Libya attack scoffs at US in plain sight

While some information identifying recipients of this message was redacted from copies of the messages obtained by Reuters, a government source said that one of the addresses to which the message was sent was the White House Situation Room, the president's secure command post.

Other addressees included intelligence and military units as well as one used by the FBI command center, the source said.

It was not known what other messages were received by agencies in Washington from Libya that day about who might have been behind the attacks.

Intelligence experts caution that initial reports from the scene of any attack or disaster are often inaccurate.

By the morning of September 12, the day after the Benghazi attack, Reuters reported that there were indications that members of both Ansar al-Sharia, a militia based in the Benghazi area, and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the North African affiliate of al Qaeda's faltering central command, may have been involved in organizing the attacks.

One U.S. intelligence official said that during the first classified briefing about Benghazi given to members of Congress, officials "carefully laid out the full range of sparsely available information, relying on the best analysis available at the time."

The official added, however, that the initial analysis of the attack that was presented to legislators was mixed.

"Briefers said extremists were involved in attacks that appeared spontaneous, there may have been a variety of motivating factors, and possible links to groups such as (al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and Ansar al-Sharia) were being looked at closely," the official said.

Dow Chemical layoffs announced prematurely

By Ernest Scheyder, Reuters

NEW YORK ??Dow Chemical Co., the largest chemical maker in the United States, said on Tuesday it plans to cut 5 percent of its workforce and shutter 20 plants as part of a restructuring program aimed at countering a slow global economy.?

Dow and other chemical companies face slipping demand for products around the world. Rival DuPont slashed its earnings forecast and announced 1,500 jobs cuts.

"The reality is we are operating in a slow-growth environment in the near-term and, while these actions are difficult, they demonstrate our resolve to tightly manage operations..." Andrew Liveris, Dow`s chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.

The company, which hopes to save $500 million a year, said the cuts will result in a loss of around 2,400 positions worldwide.

Among its planned plant closings, Dow will shutter a high density polyethylene facility in Belgium, a sodium borhidrate plant in the Netherlands, as well as manufacturing facility in Midland, Michigan.

It will also take an unspecified charge related to its Dow Kokam LLC assets, reflecting weak demand for lithium-ion batteries.

Dow initially planned to release its restructuring plans along with its third quarter earnings on Thursday, but the news was inadvertently sent to a reporter at the Bloomberg News, according to a source on Dow's board of directors.

Dow said it will pare capital spending and investment in programs that are no longer a priority. It said those cuts should save it an additional $500 million.

The company will take fourth-quarter charges of around 50 cents to 60 cents per share for asset impairments and write-offs, severance and other costs related to the measures.

Shares of the company's fell 20 cents to $28.55 after the close of regular trading. The stock fell 4 percent in New York Stock Exchange trading.

Baseball Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk charged with DUI

POSTED: Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 2:00am

UPDATED: Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 2:04am

Carlton Fisk, one of the greatest catchers in Major League Baseball history, was charged with driving under the influence after driving into a cornfield in New Lenox, Illinois, police said Tuesday.

Robert Pawlisz of the New Lenox Police Department told CNN that Fisk, who caught in more than 2,200 games for the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox, was treated and released from a hospital.

Fisk, 64, was also charged with the illegal transportation of alcohol and a lane use violation for crossing over an oncoming lane of traffic. He posted bond Monday night.

Fisk was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.

He is best remembered for hitting the game-winning home run in the bottom of the 12th inning in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. As the ball sailed toward the left field-foul pole that October 21 night, Fisk waved his arms to the right, in hopes the ball would land fair. It did, but the Reds won the World Series the next day.?

Chef Douglas McNish's Eat Raw Eat Well Cookbook Review ...

In a brave attempt to slim down after a summer that began and ended with magnificent wine and food festivals (Four Seasons Four Pinots and Kaanapali Fresh, I?m looking at you), I?ve picked up Toronto-based Douglas McNish?s new book Eat Raw Eat Well. Raw food recipes take the cook out of cookbook, but while your oven gets a break new gadgets like high-powered blenders and dehydrators come into play.

McNish clearly knows food?all food. He started out as a classically trained chef using products like meat and dairy, but later went vegan. At that point he began exploring other ways of preparing meals.

?At the age of 21, my weight hit an all time high of 270 or so pounds,? says McNish. ?I needed to make a difference in my life but did not know where to turn. It was around this time that I witnessed a video of animals in slaughterhouses and could not believe what I had witnessed. I made a conscious choice to phase out red meat and chicken for the first several months. After this time I went vegan. I stopped craving animal products. Plus, to me, it just made sense at that time. I?ve been vegan for over seven years now and feel great.?

For me, the transition is more complicated. I?m a dedicated animal lover, and as yet no gory slaughterhouse movies or images have made me stop craving burgers. My tastebuds win out over my mind every time.

But McNish?s book has turned me on to a whole new way of creating meals around vegetables and nuts. Besides, eating raw has a few delicious rewards. Because I have yet to purchase a dehydrator, I had to puree, chop, refrigerate or freeze my raw meals. It all sounds rather blah, I know, but raw foods have plenty of texture created with the use of a blade.

?The knowledge of not knowing where to start is one of the biggest barriers to jumping into a raw foods diet,? says McNish. ?I always say that changing one?s diet is like a relationship: you need to take the time to get to know it before jumping into it head first. I find that people often think that by switching over to a vegan diet, they will be missing something or feel deprived when it?s quite the opposite. There are so many foods out there that people never consume because they?re generally not found in the mainstream.?

One of the first things I noticed in McNish?s book is that preparing raw foods is not as instantaneous as you might think. It?s not just cutting up some veggies and throwing a handful of nuts into a bowl. Some ingredients require soaking time. If you want to make buckwheat porridge, that means soaking groats for a full 60 minutes. Almonds need to soak for at least an hour to make fresh almond milk.

Spicy Carrot Ginger Soup

Reading this, I definitely gravitated toward quicker preparations. Cashews require shorter soaking times, so making cashew milk and cashew cheeses went slightly faster. If making nut cheese sounds odd to you, you?re not alone. But where I lacked knowledge, this book served well and every recipe comes with a side bar of preparation tips that were really helpful.

The book is really great for beginners. It starts with chapters on how to transform and equip your kitchen. There?s also a chapter on ?raw food know how? that explains the theory behind eating a completely unprocessed diet.

The chapters list the 12 foods most contaminated by pesticides, and why you should buy organic. Other chapters are Breakfast, Smoothies and Drinks, Dips and Spreads, Soups, Salad Dressings, Sauces and Condiments, The Main Event, Sides and Small Plates, Snacks and Breads and Desserts. There is also a resource for buying raw ingredients and a list of websites that supply certified raw products.

?I like to look at this book as a bible of raw food recipes,? says McNish. ?I wrote it so it would be looked at as the type of book that contains any recipe you would want to be able to create on this diet. Whether you want to know how to make a cashew cheesecake, Cinnamon Toast Crunch smoothie, French onion flax cracker, Moroccan chickpea stew or Pad Thai sauce, it can be found in there. ?

Cashew Cheescake

Mmm? smoothies. I love making smoothies so I eased into McNish?s book with that chapter. Now my smoothie vocabulary includes a new and exotic terms like hemp milk, flax seed, cacao nibs and dried coconut. Making raw food smoothies means you can also throw away the protein powder because superfood smoothies are filled with great, fresh, raw ingredients that provide plenty of natural protein and vitamins without requiring a can of powder. The taste and texture of raw food smoothies are also rich and delicious. Flavors like apple pie and banana cream pie really taste like their namesakes, but don?t use any sugar or dairy products. The smoothie recipes alone make this a worthwhile purchase.

McNish?s book also has a surprising number of recipes designed to mimic familiar treats; the cashew spinach dip, for instance, is eerily reminiscent of the baked cheese-filled pub favorite. Many succeed in similar flavor and texture profiles. You can attribute this to McNish?s background in the food and beverage industry.

?I began cooking as a kid in high school at a British pub and instantly fell in love with every aspect of the professional kitchen,? he says. ?I went on to chef school and continued to hone my skills. After my two and a half year apprenticeship in a members-only club, I moved on and worked for some of the city?s busiest and best chefs. At 22, I made a conscious choice to ditch eating meat but continued to cook it for a living until I know what my next step would be. I made the choice to follow my passion and started to work at a vegan cafe. From there I took a job as head chef at a vegan restaurant and designed the entire menu. After my time there, I was the executive chef of a raw food restaurant for nearly two years. Since then, I?ve consulted for two high-end food service businesses, published my first cookbook (writing my second now) and am now self-employed. Looking back, I wouldn?t change a thing as I now know that I was supposed to be where I was at every point in my life.?

Another choice recipe included making noodles out of vegetables like zucchini by simply using a vegetable peeler and then topping them with a raw tomato marinara. The big lesson I learned from the soup chapter was that if you must eat your soup hot, go ahead and heat it, though it?s not considered raw.

I appreciated that McNish?s book was about flavor and not so much a dogmatic rendition of raw food philosophy. I will take many of these recipes into my repertoire, not because I?m vegan or raw food but because they?re great. The dessert section in particular has plenty of amazing confections, and I was surprised to learn how delicious pudding-like pies could be made without dairy. Knowing that, why bother go back to refined flour and sugar?

Unfortunately, I?ve not invested in a dehydrator and was unable to prepare about a third of the book?s recipes. But just reading them has intrigued me about dehydrated raw food items at the health food store.

They?re available at Choice Health Bar in Lahaina, Alive and Well in Kahului, Hawaiian Moons in Kihei and Mana Foods in Paia. Then when you?re ready to start spending on your own equipment, I hear that the best dehydrators come from Excalibur. McNish has recipes from pancakes and crepes to pizza crust and cookies in that category.

?You dehydrate foods by soaking, blending or processing, seasoning and then binding them back together again,? says McNish.?It really is quite a simple process. The most important things to understand are flavor combinations, how ingredients like flax or chia seeds work and how to utilize the right fats to create a pleasant mouth feel. Learn how flax seeds work to bind and bring together raw breads and crackers. Think big, bold flavors when thinking dehydrated foods?garlic, fresh herbs, tamari, etc.?

I had to twist McNish?s arm to get his top 10 essential ingredients for the raw food pantry. They include cashews, almonds, walnuts, dates, hemp seeds, nutritional yeast, wheat-free tamari, sunflower seeds, chia seeds and buckwheat groats. But that?s only if he had to chose just 10. There are so many more ingredients that he stocks as well.

?Coming to the realization that all beings (regardless of what type of living being they are) feel pain, love, hurt, anger or happiness was the driving force in helping to get me to be where I am today,? he says. ?Coming to the realization that I have the ability to make positive change in peoples lives on an ethical level and in their health through teaching them the skills necessary to help with clean recipe preparation is one of my most proud vegan accomplishments.?

Intrigued? Here are two recipes straight from McNish?s book that you can try at home:

Pesto Coated Carrot Parsnip Fettuccini

?

PESTO-COATED CARROT AND PARSNIP FETTUCCINI

This dish is a great way to get as many healthy ingredients into your body as possible without having to sacrifice any of the things you love. The softness of the root vegetables makes it reminiscent of traditional al dente pasta.

Makes 2 servings

3 large carrots, peeled 3

3 large parsnips, peeled 3

1 tbsp cold-pressed (extra virgin) olive oil 15 mL

1?4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, divided 60 mL

11?2 tbsp fine sea salt, divided 22 mL

3?4 cup cold-pressed hemp oil 175 mL

1?2 cup raw shelled hemp seeds 125 mL

3 cloves garlic 3

3 cups chopped fresh cilantro leaves 750 mL

1. Using a vegetable peeler, peel carrots and parsnips into long, thin strips, dropping into a bowl as completed (see Tips) Add olive oil, 1 tsp (5 mL) lemon juice and 1?4 tsp (1 mL) salt and toss until vegetables are well coated. Set aside for 10 minutes, until softened.

2. In a food processor fitted with the metal blade, process hemp oil and seeds, garlic and remaining lemon juice and salt, until somewhat smooth but the hemp seeds retain some texture. Add cilantro and process until chopped and blended, stopping the motor once to scrape down the sides of the work bowl. Add pesto to fettuccine, toss well and serve.

?

Tips

Peeling the vegetables lengthwise produces the long, thin strips required for this recipe. For best results use a Y-shaped (slingshot) vegetable peeler. When using a regular peeler, you can glide down the length of the vegetable to make one long, thin strip.

If you prefer, combine the ingredients for the marinade in a small bowl before tossing with the vegetables, to ensure even integration.

CASHEW CHEESECAKE

This rich cake is particularly delicious served with fresh berries and a sprinkle of cinnamon. I like to save this for special occasions. You will need a high-powered blender to achieve the smoothest consistency possible.

Makes 16 servings

? High-powered blender

? 9-inch (23 cm) springform pan

Filling

4 cups raw cashews, soaked (see Tips) 1 L

1 cup filtered water 250 mL

1 cup raw agave nectar 250 mL

1 cup melted coconut oil (see Tips, 250 mL? page 361)

1 tbsp raw vanilla extract 15 mL

2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 10 mL

Crust

2 cups whole raw pecans 500 mL

1?4 cup chopped pitted soft dates 60 mL

1?2 tsp fine sea salt 2 mL

1. Filling: In a high-powered blender, combine soaked cashews, water, agave nectar, coconut oil, vanilla and lemon juice. Blend at high speed until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

2. Crust: In a food processor, pulse pecans, dates and salt until smooth (no large pieces should remain). Press into bottom of pan, ensuring that there are no gaps.

3. Assembly: Pour filling over crust and freeze for at least 2 hours or until firm in the center. This dessert can be made ahead and kept in the freezer for up to 1 month.

4. When you are ready to serve, remove from freezer and set aside to thaw for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove pan sides and slice. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate for up to 1 week.

?

Tips

To soak the cashews for this recipe, cover with 8 cups (2 L) water. Set aside for 1 hour. Drain, discarding soaking water, and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear.

To check if the cake is frozen all the way through, insert a tester such as a wooden skewer or toothpick. If it comes out clean, then the cake is ready to be thawed.

For decades, coconut products (coconut oil, milk and flesh) have been painted with the anti?saturated fat brush, based on the assumption that saturated fat increases the risk for cardiovascular disease. However, recent studies have found otherwise, so long as the coconut products are unprocessed. In fact, an impressive benefit of coconut products is their ability to boost HDL (?good cholesterol?), which helps to reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease. Coconut is high in a type of saturated fat called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are unique in the sense that they are burned for energy and are less likely to be stored as body fat.

Apple's 'Fusion Drive': What is it, and do you need it?

32 min.

Apple's latest iMac features what Apple calls a "Fusion Drive," which combines a high-capacity hard disk with a high-speed solid state drive. Is it really the best of both worlds, and should you spring for it?

The choice between speed and capacity has defined our devices over the last few years. Devices like tablets have limited storage, 64GB at the most on iPads, an amount that seems paltry next to the terabytes that fit onto a single traditional hard drive for a PC. But that 64GB is flash memory, which is much faster.

As a result, things like streaming music and cloud storage have become very popular, since no one can carry around their whole media collection on their phone.

Apple's take on a well-known technology
On the PC side, for years?many users have chosen to adopt SSDs as part of their desktop systems. Since PCs can have multiple drives, a fast SSD can be used for the operating system and other critical items, and lesser-used data like old photos can sit on the high-capacity spinning drive.

Some "hybrid" drives even combine the two types of storage. Instead of making the user deal with the hassle of multiple drives, partitions, and other technical issues, the drive itself deals with all the details and the only thing the user sees is an increase in speed.

Apple's Fusion Drive is an example of this hybrid storage, though unlike those other drives, on Apple's system the fast and slow portions of the drive are actually separate devices, meaning they can be updated or replaced?individually, and also allowing the SSD piece to be of a much higher capacity. The 128GB?SSD holds the OS itself, your most?frequently used apps, and?photos and video that are in constant?use or might?otherwise load slowly. And then there's enough room on the hard disk drive to stash all the rest of your data.

Fusion needs room to breathe
Will we see the Fusion Drive expand to other devices? When rumors first appeared of the new hybrid storage, it seemed likely it would be used in the then-forthcoming Retina MacBook Pro. But when those arrived, it was clear that Apple preferred the all-flash solution, like on the MacBook Air. Like on phones and tablets, streaming and cloud services (and external drives) would have to fill the gap.

On the desktop it's another story: there's not as much need to worry about weight, heat, and other considerations that restrict the systems that can be put in a laptop. While the new iMac is certainly very thin, it still has far more space to work with, largely because it doesn't have a battery or built-in keyboard. Therefore, larger and more power-intensive systems like a hybrid drive can be included.

So we won't see the Fusion Drive on a MacBook or iPad any time soon, although it may appear as an option in more stationary products, like the Apple TV, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro. Even then, the continuing decline in price for flash memory combined with?the increasing penetration of cloud services means the feature may be no longer be necessary?in a few years.

Should you upgrade?
The big question is, of course, is it worth the upgrade, which will likely be several hundred dollars? (Apple hasn't yet revealed the price for individual upgrade options.)?If you work with lots of?large video files or high-megapixel photos, it very well might be worth it. As Apple points out, multi-gigabyte transfers and SD?card dumps could be much faster.

But if your iMac is going to be mainly for Internet, email, and a few games, the difference probably won't be noticeable ? a second or two here and there.?If you've budgeted for it, use that money instead to upgrade the processor or get something helpful like a Time Capsule for backing up your data.?

5 Reasons Why Do-it-Yourself Marketing Can - Small Business Trends

Entrepreneurs, by nature, are do-it-yourself people. Not a bad thing. While that trait may serve you in many areas there?s one where it actually works against you: Marketing. Here?s five reasons why.

1)?? You Don?t Know What You Don?t Know.

While you might feel savvy after reading a couple marketing books or listening to a savvy marketing guru, it doesn?t compare to working with a qualified team or consultant with great experience and a great record. You simply don?t know what you don?t know, and if you do it yourself, what you don?t know will hurt you. Like having a tag-line that makes no sense, or sends a wrong message. Like pouring money into SEO or your website when the better focus is Content Marketing and improved organic search. Like not realizing you need video. Or having a self-produced video that?s so unprofessional it works against you. The list goes on.

2)?? A Business Owner Can?t Be Objective.

Passionate business owners tend to be absorbed by their business?an advantage when it comes to DIY marketing, right? Not really. Effective marketing starts with an unbiased perspective. To be successful at marketing, business blemishes must be seen clearly. As a business owner you just don?t have that objectivity. If you read Ken Segall?s book Insanely Simple, about his working with Apple, you?ll read how Steve Jobs was proven wrong time and time again by his more objective and talented outside team who created some of the most iconic and successful marketing ever done.

3)?? The Best Marketing Isn?t About A System or Formula.

As more small business owners attempt to save money by trying to do their own thing, more self-proclaimed marketing gurus are popping up on the Internet with their ?Amazing Profit-Making Marketing? systems. They all sound amazing and they all claim amazing results. They even have amazing testimonials. But every business is different, and a cookie-cutter, systematic approach is not the most effective way to market a business or product. While an ?Amazing Profit-Making Marketing System? sounds amazing, the ones making the most money from them are usually the ones getting you to spend money on them.

4)?? Great Marketing Requires Talent.

Great marketing is part science, part art. Yet, the creative part often gets lost or diminished in this ever-advancing tech world. Focused, creative talent is the ingredient that helps communicate your message and persuade your prospects to buy. It?s not easy to find, but if you do it?ll make a huge difference.

5)?? DIY? Doesn?t Really Save Money.

Because you?re not spending money on outside resources you might think you?re saving tons of money with a DIY approach. Just remember this?it?s not just what you spend, it?s what you spend and get back on what you spend.

Great marketing will get you back more, and sometimes significantly more, than what you spend. So, how do you get great marketing? You find and hire great marketing people, like Steve Jobs did, like Nike?s Phil Knight did, and like every successful business owner does. And, they didn?t just do it when they were big successful companies with huge marketing budgets. They did it from the very beginning of their companies, only months after they incorporated.

You also have to factor in what your time is worth. It?s not cheap. If you kept track of every minute you spent trying to do it yourself and applied a dollar value to that, you?d be surprised at the expense. Also realize that every expensive minute you spend fumbling with something you don?t do great is taking away valuable time and talent from something you do do great. That?s another expense.

To sum up I?ll end with a simple quote from someone who?s interviewed hundreds of small business owners and knows what it takes to be successful:

?Business success is all about finding the right outside service providers and using them wisely. You can?t do it all yourself.?

Sacramento Roofing Contractors and Flat Roofing Systems | Yancey ...

Your local Sacramento roofing contractor is very knowledgeable when it comes to flat roofing systems. A flat roof has the job of keeping your structure dry and safe from the elements. There are several flat roofing technologies on the market today, some of which are better than others.

The benefits of a flat roof include being easy to build, and very economical, over their pitched roof counterparts. If you have a very large building to roof, for example, a flat roof is probably your only option, unless you engineer the building to support the additional weight of a pitched roof.

The Uppers of Flat Roofs

HVAC equipment can be installed on a flat roof, instead of on the ground. Furthermore, a flat roof can be used as an extension of the inside space, for a roof top deck, penthouse, or even as a green roof, which is very popular these days in urban areas. The economic benefits of a flat roof, along with their ecological advantages make them appealing. Oil base asphalt shingles for sloped roofs end up in landfills each year, which can be very detrimental to our environment. Flat roofs don?t use shingles.

The Downers of Flat Roofs

There are downsides to having a flat roof as well. Water and snow can just sit on the roof, and while water can be properly drained, snow may gather until spring melt-off. An engineer would need to plan a high load for such roofs in colder climates, so they could handle the weight of that snow.

Standing water, on top of the roof, can cause leakage. A slight pitch is needed, along with several drains, to take care of this problem. Tapered insulation to direct the flow of water towards the drains can fix the retention issue. It is important to have adequate drain systems to avoid any possible damage to the structure, house or building.

Experience in Low Sloped Roofing is Important

It is important for a roofing contractor to be experienced in low sloped roofs, especially in the Sacramento area, where roof pitches are quite shallow. A Sacramento roofing contractor will be able to give you a good quote on what it will cost to re-roof your home, or whether you can get by with a simple repair instead.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Sting has moved the location of his "Back to Bass Tour" concert in the Philippines following a petition by environmentalists who said the original venue is owned by a conglomerate that plans to uproot 182 trees for a parking lot and mall expansion in a northern mountain city.

The SM Mall of Asia Arena said on Saturday that changing the site of the Dec. 9 concert was "the decision of the artist himself."

"Understandably, the known environment advocate artist was left with no choice in spite of the SM representatives' appeal," it said in a statement.

SM Prime Holdings, which operates SM malls and the arena on Manila Bay, is owned by the Philippines' richest man, mall mogul Henry Sy.

Environmentalists said in their petition that as a champion of the environment, "Sting can't be saving rainforests and enabling SM to rape the environment at the same time!"

Sting and his wife Trudie Styler established The Rainforest Foundation in 1989 to protect tropical rainforests and the people who live there.

Arena business manager Arnel Gonzales told The Associated Press that the venue became "collateral damage" in the environmentalists' campaign.

"With this successful move to stop Sting from holding the concert at SM MOA Arena, and referring to the venue as an 'oppressor,' it is now looking more like the court battle has extended from saving trees, to ruining a corporate giant's reputation completely," the arena said in its statement.

A local court has temporarily stopped the mall expansion plans in northern Baguio city.

Karlo Marko Altomonte, who initiated the petition, wrote Sting's foundation saying that removing the trees would significantly increase air pollution and the risk of landslides and flooding in an area near schools.

"Thank you, Sting, for helping us defend our environment, our heritage, our home," he wrote on his Facebook page.

Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash was 35 years ago

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

It was one of the most devastating days in American music. Thirty-five years ago Saturday, a plane carrying the band Lynyrd Skynyrd ran out of fuel and crashed in Gillsburg, Miss., killing six people, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and siblings?guitarist Steve Gaines and vocalist Cassie Gaines. The band's pilot, co-pilot and assistant road manager also died in the crash, and many more were injured.

Getty Images file

Lynyrd Skynyrd performs in 1976, a year before the plane crash.

The site TennesseeConcerts.com lets interested persons read about the crash as it was covered in real-time by the local paper, the Enterprise-Journal. The newspaper's front page was given over to the disaster, with a horrendous photo of the wreckage showing that the plane pretty much split in two.

Rescuers had to cross a 20-foot-wide, waist-deep creek and dig through a forest so overgrown and untouched that some emergency vehicles got stuck in the mud on their way to the scene, the Enterprise-Journal reported. The paper also quotes a local resident who was approached by bloody survivors, one of whom hugged him around the neck while saying "we got to get them out."

Three days before the crash, the band had released its latest album, "Street Survivors," which originally featured a cover showing the band surrounded by flames (it was quickly changed). The album became a hit, but the decimated band broke up, only to reunite in 1987 and begin touring again.

Their music lives on -- "Sweet Home Alabama"?especially has a permanent place in American rock history.?A whole generation of fans who love the song weren't even around for the crash,?which has passed into shadowy musical legend.

In the 1997 Nicolas Cage movie "Con Air," as "Sweet Home Alabama" plays, Steve Buscemi's character says, "Define irony. Bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash."

He wasn't quite right. While the?crash would seem to have destroyed the entire band, that isn't quite true. Lynyrd Skynyrd is currently touring Florida and about to move the tour to the United Kingdom. But the echoes of that day 35 years ago still resonate for those with a lengthy musical memory.

Diet soda may be doing these 7 bad things to your body

What's the single biggest source of calories for Americans? White bread? Big Macs? Actually, try soda. The average American drinks about two cans of the stuff daily. Diet soda may have no calories, but it can come with its own set of side effects.

Mars Rover Solves Metallic Object Mystery, Unearths Another

The advantage isn't taking metals back. It's using them on Mars. If there really is even just metallic iron, that'd be a HUGE benefit for colonization.

However, without trade, the colony will always be dependent on its parent nation. And that's not really a colony, it's just an outpost. A really expensive outpost.

The advantage with asteroids (and to some extent lunar development), is that you can serve other markets. Even if it's not cost effective to bring the product back to Earth, as long as it's cheaper than launching from Earth, there should be a small but growing market for in-orbit delivery. Starting with fuel, then air/water, then bulk shielding and crude structures, and developing through more complex manufactured materials. And each stage also feeds back on itself, if you can supply fuel cheaper than Earth-launch, you lower your own running costs, and make whole new activities possible in space which creates whole new markets...

Such a process, once started, should then develop naturally, with each stage paying for itself and creating a market for the next stage; without requiring constant funding through traditional space agencies. [Although it will also give space agencies more bang for their buck. As well as making space exploration easier to justify to the average voter, and the very average politicians.] Until one day you read about how many people permanently live in space, and you realise that we are finally genuinely out there.

Mars won't do that. It will always be a "program", a drain. Historically, colonies like that always fail.

SAUS SAUSES IT UP WITH SAUSY SAUS EVENT ? The Cascade l ...

By Sasha Moedt (The Cascade) ? Email

Print Edition: October 17, 2012

The Sociology Anthropology Undergraduate Society (SAUS) was getting saucy Thursday night, with two bands ready to get up on the stage at AfterMath, Anth-Soc trivia cards on the table, and a new $3 shot called the Indiana Jones (get it? Because of archaeology?). Needless to say, UFV?s social scientists were pretty happy.

The music was blaring, and the place was filling up. SAUS board members wandered from table to table selling the 50-50 draw. They had a deal ? $10 for the amount of tickets that can be measured from finger tip to fingertip, arms spread out. Good idea in theory, but perhaps they weren?t expecting the giant guy with the wingspan of an albatross sitting with his buddies at the back of the pub.

Students, delighted that they could use what they learned in the classroom in the real world, filled out the trivia cards.

The bands took a while to get on the stage. Daniel Moir and his crew got on first. Moir?s done pretty well as a Canadian musician?from Edmonton?at age 20. He sang some quiet folksy-pop music that smoothed the atmosphere in the darkly-lit pub. CIVL worked the sound. Moir has a very soft, mellow voice that matches his young, boyish face, and he had an honest, almost solemn or shy presence that made him feel pretty authentic.

Between the bands, Sophie Thomas, SAUS president and Caity Therrien, secretary, read out the trivia winners. Of course I didn?t bother guessing the questions ? as an English major, the phrase Homo floresiensis doesn?t ring any bells. Apparently, it?s the smallest human species that ever lived, standing at three feet tall. But, the species is nicknamed ?the hobbit? by anthropologists ? So I think we English majors can mingle with the Anth-Soc types after all.

Those who did guess correct won some cool stuff: gift certificates for shoes at Lady Fern and food at the Roasted Grape (both in downtown Abby), a Storm Brewing hoody and a beach bag filled with goodies. Mr. Albatross and his friends won the 50-50, of course.

This is THE SHOES came on loud and awesomely bluesy. Jereme Collette started off with heavy beats on the kick drum and electric guitar, and Sabrina Robson just blew everyone?s mind with a sexy, husky voice that was so powerful. Robson played the harmonica and smashed the cowbell with equal energy, and Collette rocked his beard (it just made that raw, rough vibe stronger). Robson?s vocals alone could have kept me there.

SAUS president Sophie Thomas was the one who brought forward the idea of bringing them out to Abbotsford; she knew them through her partner?s family. ?I actually met them a few months ago at a wedding, and had got chatting with them,? Thomas explained. ?They were quite keen on getting out to the Valley, so, I had heard them and then I presented the SAUS board members with the music ? that this was a really excellent opportunity, let?s get them out, students will love them ? Jereme was actually an Anthropology student himself so there?s that interesting connection there.

It can?t be denied that This is THE SHOES really made the night. Sophie Thomas said that ?the goal with looking at a band like them was primarily wanting to focus on a local band, somebody related and fun and that was going to be stimulating and enjoyable for the students as well.? It certainly was that!

All in all, SAUS board members were happy with the event. ?It ran smoothly! This was our first pub night, so there were little details we didn?t even think to take into account, like the kitchen closing at 8 p.m., we just assumed that it would be open,? Thomas laughed. ?So that would probably be the one glitch of the night.?

?Other than that, we had tremendous amount of support from Brad at AfterMath and from the SUS board members and from CIVL ? to get us all the information we needed in order to have it run smoothly, so because of that support it went very well.?
