The small towns where home price gains are big

AP file

With nearby Facebook driving up incomes, home prices in Menlo Park, Calif., are on the rise.

By Rusty Weston, 24/7 Wall St.

The advantages of small-town living are well known?to Americans ? and not just because of Norman Rockwellesque clich?s about values, neighborliness and pace of life. These days, most prosperous small towns are bedroom communities with good public schools and easy commutes to large employment centers.

Have small-town housing markets bounced all the way back to prehousing crisis levels? Answer: not just yet. But based on data provided by?Zillow, a leading provider of real estate listings and market data, 24/7 Wall St. was able to identify small towns that have?demonstrated strong signs of a healthy recovery in the past year.

24/7 Wall St.:?10 towns that cannot turn around

Some of the large year-over-year increases are the result of a market correction, believes Louise Keely, senior vice president at Nielsen?s?The Demand Institute, a leading provider of consumer behavior data. ?Prices went down too much, and now the market is moving back to an equilibrium,? Keely told 24/7 Wall St. ?I would expect a leveling out, and housing price growth nationally is going to be in the low single digits.?

Small towns will stay competitive with larger nearby communities, Keely said. ?Small towns tend to have lower home prices than nearby urban areas, and that will make them more attractive for households with weaker household balance sheets than they were?seven to 10 years ago.?

As part of the greater Phoenix metro area, Florence suffered during the recent housing bust but is now staging a significant comeback. However, according to Professor Mark Stapp, who runs the Masters of Real Estate Development program at Arizona State University?s W.P. Carey School of Business, the recovery is a bit misleading.

?We lost so much value in housing that the increase in price is driven off of a very low base,? said?Stapp. ?What you?re seeing is increases in prices off of a historic low ? so it?s a bit deceiving because it?s not a sustainable growth rate. But I don?t think you?re going to see prices fall.?

No doubt small towns will see their fair share of the recovery.?A study?by the National Association of Home Builders indicates that builder confidence is the highest it has been since June 2006.?The home builders association?projects increased demand for new homes, which not only addresses buyer demands, but also the additional housing stock helps slow the rate of home price increases.

24/7 Wall St.: The 10 states with the strongest housing markets

24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 small towns with the fastest rising housing prices based on?Zillow?housing data. We defined small towns as having between 30,000 to 50,000 residents. To be considered, the small town had to have the highest year-over-year growth through August 2012. Because several metropolitan statistical areas included more than one small town with the fastest growing housing market, we only considered the small town in each?statistical area?with the fastest growth.

These are the small towns with booming housing markets.

1. Florence, Ariz.

  • ?One-year home price change: 21.8 percent
  • ?Metropolitan statistical area: Phoenix, Ariz.
  • ?Population:?30,880
  • ?Median home value:?$115,300

Home prices in Florence are recovering amid surging demand from an influx of new residents in the area. The town?s population has risen by nearly 50 percent since 2010.?During the downturn, new home construction declined sharply in the greater Phoenix area, a factor that helped to constrain home prices during the housing crisis. Despite the 21.8 percent increase in the past year, home values are still more than $35,000 under the national median.

2. Northville Township, Mich.

  • ?One-year home price change: 15.7 percent
  • ?Metropolitan statistical area:?Detroit, Mich.
  • ?Population:?35,300
  • ?Median home value:?$268,700

This upper-middle class Detroit suburb is buoyed by a high-performing school district that helped sustain property values amid challenging economic times for Michigan. The school district tips its cap to its constituent demographics. The majority of the community is employed in middle and upper management positions with the auto industry and subsidiaries or professional occupations. Home prices in many Detroit suburbs have grown in value in the past year, including such larger areas as West Bloomfield and Utica. Northville is one of the more expensive communities among them. The median home value in the town exceeds that of homes in the?average Detroit neighborhood by more than $110,000.

3. Saratoga, Calif.

  • ?One-year home price change: 14.4 percent
  • ?Metropolitan statistical area: San Jose, Calif.
  • ?Population:?31,102
  • ?Median home value:?$1,620,200

Local lore has it that IPOs by LinkedIn, Facebook, Zynga?and other tech companies have given a strong push to housing markets in Silicon Valley, which encompasses much of the Peninsula north of San Jose. There appears to be increasing competition among buyers vying for a constrained housing supply in this upscale suburb. The estimated home value in Saratoga ? $1.6 million ? is the second highest in the country for any town or city with at least 30,000 residents, behind only Beverly Hills.

24/7 Wall St.: Cities with the most homes in foreclosure

4. Kendall West, Fla.

  • ?One-year home price change: 13.7 percent
  • ?Metropolitan statistical area: Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
  • ?Population:?39,742
  • ?Median home value:?$101,800

Housing prices in this mostly working-class and unincorporated Miami suburb have shown resiliency in the face of a housing downturn that?affected much of the state in recent years. Home prices here have managed to outpace state averages and double since 2000, despite the downturn. Despite a nearly 14 percent growth in home prices in the past year, estimated home prices barely exceed $100,000, and are roughly $50,000 less than the U.S. median home price for August.

5. Menlo Park, Calif.

  • ?One-year home price change: 13.4 percent
  • ?Metropolitan statistical area: San Francisco, Calif.
  • ?Population:?40,795
  • ?Median home value:?$1,169,600

This affluent suburb on the edge of Palo Alto, Calif., is home to many venture capital companies that are helping to fuel the current IPO and tech boom in Silicon Valley. The biggest local employer is Facebook. Although the social network?s post-IPO performance has failed to meet expectations, some of the wealth it generated appears to have stayed close to home. The average home price in the suburb is more than 7.5 times the U.S. median.

Chinese premier calls on citizens to back Communist Party

China: China's Premier Wen Jiabao called on Saturday for the Chinese to unite in support of the Communist Party and outgoing President Hu Jintao, ahead of a pivotal congress to usher in new leadership.

The announcement comes amid a damaging political scandal involving Bo Xilai, a senior party boss who is to stand trial for a litany of crimes including abuse of power and improper sexual relations.

"Let us rally more closely around the CPC central committee with comrade Hu Jintao as the general secretary," said Wen in a speech two days before the 63rd anniversary of the proclamation of the People's Republic of China.

Hu will handover power as head of the party to Vice President Xi Jinping during the congress on November 8, but will remain the country's president until next March.

The congress will allow the party to "open new perspectives on development," Wen told an audience of some 2,000 diplomats and officials gathered at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square.

Wen, who will also give up his position as head of government next spring -- most likely to Vice Premier Li Keqiang -- recapped his party's achievements in expanding economic growth but said more needed to be done.

"We have followed the overall guideline of making progress while ensuring stability, strengthened and improved macro regulations and given greater priority to stabilising growth," he said.

But he added: "While recognising achievements, we must always keep a cool head. Our country is still at the primary stage of socialism and productivity is not high."

He also touched upon foreign policy amid an ongoing territorial dispute with Japan over remote islands in the East China Sea, which has seen relations between the two countries plummet.

"We will firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Wen vowed.

Q&A: Todd Crawford of Impact Radius on state of affiliate marketing ...

Door Geno Prussakov, september 28th, 2012

Todd CrawfordAs affiliate marketing matures, newer threats and challenges also evolve. However, the opportunities are still bountiful, and with the right approach a merchant can still succeed marketing their brand and business through a well-built affiliate program.

Today's guest is Todd Crawford, a recognizable affiliate marketing veteran, co-founder of Impact Radius, and former VP of sales and business development at Digital River's oneNetworkDirect.

In 1998 Todd also contributed to the founding team at Commission Junction, where he later served as Vice President for more than seven years.

What are the major challenges with which you see affiliate managers struggle?

Balancing time between revenue generating activities and administrative activities.? I think many people get bogged down with the day-to-day administrative tasks and don?t focus enough energy on the revenue generating part of the job.? The key takeaway is creating as many efficiencies as possible to minimize the time required for day-to-day stuff so you free up more time to develop incremental revenue opportunities.

What do you view as the main affiliate program growth opportunities?

The affiliate channel is often kept separate from other media and ad distribution channels because of the performance pricing.? There?s a significant opportunity to pull other distribution channels into the performance category because of the improvements in tracking and reporting. For example, a lot of companies offering distribution with mobile or through remarketing are willing to do so on a performance-basis. I think there?s a lot of room for growth and expansion with media partners that historically were bucketed in the display or search channels.

In April 2012 an Illinois Circuit Court Judge ruled the affiliate nexus tax unconstitutional. However, more and more states are considering going the route of the "affiliate tax". Is there a good solution to this snowballing affiliate nexus tax situation?

The only real solution is a national Internet sales tax or some kind of tax that applies equally to all advertisers regardless of the media type that drove the conversion.

How can affiliate networks help merchants to continue working in the states with the affiliate nexus tax legislation?

I am not sure that affiliate networks or any other third-party can help solve nexus issues.? Technology cannot solve nexus issues.? The advertiser is responsible for interpreting and complying with any and all applicable tax laws.? It has been my experience that advertisers rely on their legal counsel or CFO for this advice. Beware of technologies that tell you they can solve nexus issues.

What about the "Do Not Track" legislation? Is affiliate marketing industry in danger here? And does Impact Radius have relevant solutions?

I am confident that privacy and marketing can co-exist peacefully.? Eventually, websites will not be able to generate revenue if consumers opt out of monetization of content.? I believe these sites will restrict access to visitors that do not wish to be tracked.? Consumers will have a choice - visit our site and allow us to make money or do not access our content.? In the end, I think most consumers will understand this? trade off? as fair and reasonable and doesn?t compromise their person information or security.

What are the top 3 things that affiliate managers (and merchants) should be looking at while choosing an affiliate network?

Yes, I am really looking forward to participating on this panel.? The first distinction I would like to make is that Impact Radius is a technology provider, not a network - this puts us in a unique position to help advertisers and agencies better manage their top relationships - from both a cost perspective and an incremental revenue perspective.? The first thing to look for when selecting any technology vendor is how will it solve your problems or allow you to meet your revenue objectives? When choosing a network, you need to know how the technology will support your needs and objectives.?

The second consideration is cost.? Networks typically charge a fee based on the success of your program - the bigger it gets, the more you pay.? If you or your agency are doing all the work of growing the program, does this pricing model make sense for your business?? The third consideration is do you even need a network to attract and manage partners? Most advertisers see 90%+ of their volume coming from a handful of top partners. These top partners are generally well known in the industry and easy to contact and recruit - especially if you are a medium to large brand.

Over the next 4 years Forrester predicts a steady growth for affiliate marketing. What are the top 3 areas of opportunity for affiliates these days?

  1. Content -- Developing unique content that attracts repeat visitors is the single most valuable asset any publisher can invest in.
  2. Mobile -- I believe in a few more years mobile will surpass online - so the sooner you get there, the sooner you will be successful.
  3. Media -- Utilizing more accurate and flexible tools to enable and measure more media channels to increase traffic to your site(s). Do not rely solely on search (paid or organic) for your livelihood.? Diversification into other media channels reduces your dependence on one channel for the majority of your traffic.? If you?re not already testing social, retargeting, email, etc. - it?s time to start!

If you were to leave affiliate managers with just one advice today, what would it be?

Communicate the value of your channel (and your contribution) to internal teams throughout the week, month, quarter and year.? Utilize every metric available to you to understand how your channel compares and interacts with other marketing efforts and educate your company on what you?ve learned.

Hospital observation units could save the health care system $3.1 billion

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? New research suggests that maximizing the potential of observation units in hospitals could result in significant cost savings for the both the hospital and the healthcare system.

Previous research has shown that observation units in a hospital can be an efficient way to care for certain patients, but only about one-third of hospitals in the United States have such units. Now, researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) estimate that maximizing the potential of an observation unit in a hospital could result in $4.6 million in savings annually for the hospital and $3.1 billion in overall savings for the health care system in the United States. These findings are published online by Health Affairs and will also appear in the journal's October issue.

"We believe that this is the first attempt to quantify the financial impact of an observation unit," said Christopher Baugh, MD, lead researcher on the paper and a physician in the Emergency Department at BWH. "Wider use of observation units may play a significant role in saving cost for the health care system and future policies that are focused on doing so should include support for observation units as an alternative tin short-stay inpatient admission," Dr. Baugh said.

An observation until, a dedicated space typically near or within the emergency department, is an alternative to inpatient admission and is dedicated to caring for patients, usually for a 24-hour period, who have been discharged from the emergency department (ED) but require further observation and are not ready to safely leave the hospital. Previous research has shown that care in these units is equal or better in quality compared to inpatient care for certain patient populations.

Researchers used national survey data and published research to determine the average cost saving per observation unit and the number of hospitals that would benefit from an observation unit. They created a simulation model by using a method frequently used to evaluate risk in business when there are many uncertain variables.

Based on their model, researchers report that the average amount saved per patient, after adjusting for inflation could be $1,572 per visit to the observation unit when compared to an inpatient admission. Overall, the national cost savings could be up to $3.1 billion annually if the potential of observation units were maximized. This savings is due largely to avoiding 2.4 million inpatient admissions. Additionally, researchers report that for hospitals with large enough volume to justify the operation of an observation unit, the annual cost saving for that hospital would be $4.6 million, resulting from approximately 3,600 inpatient admissions avoided. Hospitals that would fit into this category include all those with more than 50,000 annual ED visits and many hospitals with 20,000-50,000 annual ED visits.

"In the wake of health care reform and increased scrutiny on the cost of health care, the health care system is under pressure to maintain quality care while decreasing cost. Observation units represent a feasible way to achieve this goal and merit further evaluation as model for acute care redesign to increase the value of care provided throughout the country," Dr. Baugh said.

Calif. man behind anti-Muslim film ordered jailed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The surrounding mystery of the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East took a strange turn after he appeared in court and gave yet another name in a string of aliases.

Arrested on Thursday after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

The full story about Nakoula and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed in Benghazi. Violence related to the film has since spread, killing dozens more.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Nakoula to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Nakoula had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Nakoula this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Nakoula's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said. Nakoula told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

The public got their first good look at Nakoula on Thursday, although the news media was banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse.

Nakoula wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Nakoula's attorney Steven Seiden sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Nakoula has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Nakoula would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Nakoula's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film while condemning its content. And federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Nakoula is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Nakoula couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

(AP) ? Eight people are appearing in court to face charges connected to the phone hacking scandal that rocked Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. empire.

Rebekah Brooks, the former chief of News Corp.'s British newspapers, and Andy Coulson, the ex-communications chief for Prime Minister David Cameron, were among those appearing in court Wednesday.

The eight are accused of participating in a campaign of espionage which targeted hundreds of celebrities, sports stars, politicians and crime victims.

Among the hacking targets was Milly Dowler, a 13-year-old girl abducted and murdered in a case that drew national attention. Journalists are alleged to have eavesdropped on her mobile phone, listened to her voicemail messages, and deleted some of them in order to make room for more.

Making It Easy So You Can Understand How Marketing With Email ...

Effective email promoting campaigns can help to increase profits for your business. In order to be successful, they must be done right. One of the fastest ways to destroy the trust of your customers is to spam them with unwanted email. In order to reach plenty of potential customers effectively, you can check out the following handy marketing with email ideas.

An important tip for any email marketer is to keep all branding consistent. Your business name and subject line are an important part of your brand just like your design is. Keep these as consistent as possible from email to email, so that customers recognize your marketing materials. Don?t send completely different designs with each email. This practice makes it more difficult for customers to recognize who the emails are coming from.

Have a field in your opt-in registration where subscribers can leave at a minimum their first name, if not first and last. This allows you to personalize the message to each subscriber. Taking the time to address your potential customer by their name will cause you to stand out from the others.

Make sure your email messages are personal to the reader. There?s much more you can do aside from just using the recipients name in the heading. Use every scrap of information that you have on your subscribers. Divide your list into smaller ones with shared interests or priorities and make sure you draft messages tailored to their needs.

Only use marketing via email to target people who have give you permission to contact them. Mailing people who are not familiar with you or your product can look like spam. Recipients will be left scratching their heads, wondering if they actually know you, and they?ll possibly feel suspicious about what you have to offer. They will just send your email to their spam folder, and it will be a huge waste of your time.

It is important to create a pleasing layout for your emails. It is tempting to use graphics, but spam filters can block logos, pictures, and animation more now than ever. The important information needs to be contained within the text of the email. Provide inviting links to your web site and let your audience see your graphics there.

If your email marketing campaign isn?t generating the returns you expected, try pairing your emails with text messages. When used together, these two techniques can ensure that all of your customers are receiving the information they wish to. Text messages will allow you to increase your brand awareness.

You should put together a carefully targeted sales list. This can be accomplished by encouraging your loyal customers, along with their many contacts, to sign up for your email dispatches. One way to target your list while also giving your messages more weight is to give your emails the feel of insider, exclusive information available only to subscribers.

Marketing via email is a most effective and easy method to contact interested parties about your products or services. Keep your email messages short and sweet as well as appropriate to your industry. About RAKIM
In the history of the Hip-Hop, few artists have had as great an impact on the development and progression of the art forms lyrical style as Rakim Allah.? Universally referenced as one of the Masters of the Microphone and an influence and inspiration to his peers and followers alike, Rakim first exploded onto the scene with the release of iconic Eric B. is President in 1986 with longtime collaborator Eric B.? The single marked a turning point in the Rap world ? raising the bar for future emcees and revolutionizing the way rhymes are delivered to this day.? No serious discussion of the music's greatest performers is held without a deferential accounting of his achievements, and no serious rap artist grips a microphone without channeling some of his legend.

Rakim's uncanny innovation was the focal point of the critically acclaimed recreation of Bob Marley's Concrete Jungle and has helped propel movie soundtracks such as Juice, Brown Sugar, the Rugrats, American Psycho and 8 Mile to Best Seller status.? His role model status has led world famous brands such as Reebok, The Coca Cola Company, LVMH, Ecko and Sean Jean to choose him as spokesperson.

Now nearing twenty-five years at the top of Hip-Hop's Greatest list, the Long Island, NY native not only continues to record for himself, but also works with young artists signed to his own record imprint, Ra Records.? With recent tributes in 2012 such as being named the #1 Lyricist of All Time by The Source magazine, receiving the coveted BET Lifetime Achievement Award and being nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, two original music projects, his first feature film role and sold-out international tours keeping the world's eye on the one many call The GOD EmCee, Rakim Allah continues to lead where others just follow.

WHY IT MATTERS: Debt

The issue:

A sea of red ink is confronting the nation and presidents to come.

The budget deficit ? the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects in taxes and fees? is on track to top $1 trillion for the fourth straight year. When there's not enough to pay current bills, the government borrows, mostly by selling interest-bearing Treasury bonds, bills and notes to investors and governments worldwide. It now borrows about 40 cents for every dollar it spends.

The national debt refers to the total amount the federal government owes; the deficit is just a one-year slice.

The U.S. has been borrowing since the 1700s, when it needed money to finance the American Revolution. The outstanding debt has since risen to a shade over $16 trillion. While there's plenty of finger-pointing by politicians over who's to blame, deficits historically surge during wars and deep recessions, and the U.S. has had both over the past decade.

___

Where they stand:

President Barack Obama has proposed bringing deficits down by slowing spending gradually, to avoid suddenly tipping the economy back into recession. To help, he would raise taxes on households earning over $250,000 annually and impose a surcharge of 30 percent on those making over $1 million.

He acknowledges his spending on recession-fighting stimulus, tax relief and bailout programs ? much of it started under former President George W. Bush ? has contributed to the deficit. But so have bipartisan agreements to extend Bush-era tax cuts, and paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also raising deficits: a falloff in tax revenues as more people found themselves out of work and personal and corporate incomes sagged in the deepest downturn since the Great Depression.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney would lower deficits mostly through deep spending cuts, including some of the reductions proposed by his conservative running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee. But many of the cuts they're pushing would be partially negated by their proposals to lower top tax rates on both corporations and individuals.

___

Why it matters:

Deficits and debt are important because it's never good to spend more than you make for too long. The party out of power always makes deficits a big issue against the one holding the White House ? as Democrats did in 2008 and Republicans are doing now.

Leaders of both parties agree the burden will become unsustainable if borrowing is not reined in while interest obligations keep rising. But huge policy differences exist over how to balance the budget or at least trim deficits to manageable levels ? whether through spending cuts, tax increases or a mix.

Obama and Democrats tend to favor a combination, while Republicans mostly want just spending cuts, although Romney and Ryan say they'd also end some tax deductions and close loopholes ? without specifying which ones.

Congress sets a ceiling on how much the government can borrow. If this debt limit is breached, the government will default on its obligations. This has never happened, but it almost did last summer in a Capitol Hill standoff. As a consequence, the nation's credit rating was downgraded for the first time ever.

The current $16.4 trillion debt limit will be reached late this year or early next. A slew of tax breaks will expire at the same time.

No matter who wins, he'll immediately have his hands full.

How to use Passbook on your iPhone

Featured

The iPhone 5 started shipping (and hitting store shelves) on Friday, Sept. 21. According to Apple, the company has sold more than?five milli... Read more

1 day

One of the?most useful ? but likely misunderstood ? new features introduced in Apple's iOS 6 software for the iPhone is called Passbook. At first glance, the app might even seem like it doesn't serve a purpose. While it might not exactly be well-explained, it can simplify the process of keeping track of various passes ? such as tickets, coupons, and gift cards ? once you know how it works.

Step 1: Downloading supported apps

In order to do things with Passbook, you need to have apps that work with it installed on your phone. Getting them is easy enough: When you load up the Passbook app for the first time, you'll see a screen describing what it can do, along with a button that, when touched, whisks you away to a special Passbook section of the App Store.

Once there, you'll see a current list of all the Passbook-compatible apps available for download. They include those from United Airlines, American Airlines, Fandango, Target, Walgreens, and more. For the purpose of this article, we've downloaded the latter two.

Step 2: Finding things to add to Passbook

In the case of Walgreens' app (download for iPhone) you can add the chain's rewards card, called Balance Rewards, to your Passbook. This involves scanning your physical card's barcode or entering your info, after which you're able to store a virtual version of the card in Passbook. You also have the option of selecting your nearest store, so that when you're near it your phone will automatically display your card.

Target's app (download for iPhone) gives you to special mobile coupons redeemable at your local store. The latest version of the app lets you add these coupons to Passbook so they can be quickly accessed without having to load the actual Target app.

For other apps, such as Fandango and Major League Baseball (MLB), you can add movie and event tickets to Passbook in a similar fashion, then have them scanned at the theater or sporting venue. Airline passes for United, American Airlines, and Lufthansa will be automatically displayed when you arrive at the airport, and Passbook can even alert you to your gate number and any changes to your flight that might occur.

Step 3: Using Passbook in everyday life

As we mentioned earlier, with location-aware Passbook passes you can have your iPhone alert you when you're near somewhere they can be used. For example, with the Walgreens Balance Rewards card, a notification will appear on the iPhone's lock screen anytime you're near the Walgreens you've designated as your home store. Sliding the notification causes the virtual card to slide onto the screen so that it can be scanned. Pressing the menu button makes it slide back off so you can unlock your phone.

Passes such as the Target mobile coupons aren't location-aware, so you actually need to run the Passbook app and tap on them so they can be scanned. Tickets, boarding passes, and gift cards can be set to automatically alert you when you're near where they can be used. It really just depends on the way the apps that create the passes are designed.

When you're done using a pass, you get to use one of our favorite features ? well, at least the most fun ? of Passbook, the shredder. Tapping the small information icon on a pass will flip it over to reveal settings, such as the ability to turn its location-awareness on and off, or determine whether or not it'll display on your lock screen. If you tap the trash can icon, you'll be asked if you want to delete the pass. Tap yes and an animated shredder will slide up the screen, cutting the pass into strips, removing it from Passbook.

Handy, and sure to get better

Passbook has only been available for a matter of days, but we're already finding it pretty handy. Its usefulness will only improve as more retailers and businesses design their apps to make use of it. Before long, we'll all hopefully have a lot more room in our wallets because of fewer cards and papers we'll need to worry about losing thanks to this handy app.

What's New in Windows Installer on Windows 8

Here's a quick summary what's new in the MSI engine that comes with Windows 8.

What's new in MSI 5 on Windows 8

According to the documentation:

My own findings so far:

  • Windows Installer runtime version - as indicated by the file version of msi.dll - is 5.0.9200.16384
  • VersionNT = 602 (so similar to Windows 7 Microsoft didn't increment the major version for application compatibility reasons)
  • WindowsBuild = 9200

According to Darwin Sanoy, Windows Installer also processes Appx Packages when installing Windows Store Apps.

Sprint hits 1 million LTE devices sold

Android Central

At a recent conference, Sprint announced that they have sold 1 million LTE devices and counting. As much as it might pain us Android fans, the iPhone 5 is listed there and probably helped Sprint at least a little bit in crossing that milestone. Sprint has a lengthy list of new LTE markets it plans on addressing before the end of 2013 in addition to its existing 19 metropolitan coverage zones. Sprint's LTE network is relatively young, having only launched in mid-July, so it's understandable that they're pumped about the milestone.

For all of the LTE devices it has sold, Sprint still has a lot of financial ground to make up, but with the holiday season around the corner, at least they'll have a slightly easier time addressing that challenge. I just can't help but imagine Verizon and AT&T bigwigs chortling at Sprint's LTE device sales figure.

Sprint customers, what's your favorite LTE device that they're offering? The rest of y'all, are there any Sprint-exclusive devices that tempt you to switch, or is service the key differentiator for you?

Pitcher Brandon McCarthy visits A's teammates

By JANIE McCAULEY

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:58 p.m. ET Sept. 14, 2012

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy stopped by the clubhouse to visit his teammates Friday, just more than a week after getting hit in the head by a line drive.

He was a jokester as usual and worked on a crossword puzzle.

"I told him he should fill in a crossword and put a bunch of letters backward," reliever Jerry Blevins said. "He said, `I'll fill all the slots in with smiley faces.' It was really fun. He's still the same old guy."

"Everybody was really excited to see him and I think he was very excited to see us, too. There's just nothing that compares to the clubhouse atmosphere and just having him back and being around the guys, it's hard to beat that," he said.

McCarthy underwent two hours of surgery late on Sept. 5 after he was hit in the right side of the head earlier in the day by a liner from the Los Angeles Angels' Erick Aybar. The right-hander and Oakland's opening day starter was released from the hospital Tuesday.

"Jeanie (my wife) and I have been worried since Brandon was hit," owner Lew Wolff said in an e-mail. "To see him looking so great in the clubhouse tonight and having him tell me his `major' problem was boredom was wonderful to hear."

The 29-year-old McCarthy sustained an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture on the play. The pitcher wasn't available to the media Friday.

Outfielder Jonny Gomes had an A's batting helmet signed by all of McCarthy's teammates with "heads up" written on the bill for the pitcher.

Upon being discharged from the hospital, McCarthy said he hopes to return to the mound. Blevins said everyone shook McCarthy's hand and gave him a hug after players made their way inside following batting practice before the series opener with the Baltimore Orioles.

"There was an overall cheer, I would assume, from all of us," Blevins said. "Everybody just kind of waited their turn and people got to talk to him."

McCarthy will remain in the Bay Area for three weeks. He is 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA this year in his sixth big league season and second with the A's. He went 9-9 with a 3.32 ERA last season.

"He looks normal, he's just got a buzzed head and a cool scar," Blevins said. "He looks a lot tougher than he did."

Ford board studies options for next CEO

Washington ? Ford Motor Co.'s board of directors met Thursday to discuss the company's succession efforts, but plans no announcements, a company spokesman said.

The Dearborn automaker's 16-member board has been considering a plan to eventually replace Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally, 67.

Ford Americas President Mark Fields, 51, is the odds-on favorite, although the board has considered other candidates inside and outside the automaker.

"We have no planned announcements today regarding succession plans," Ford spokesman Jay Cooney said Thursday.

The board meeting lasted a few hours and wrapped up around noon.

Ford is launching its all-new 2013 Fusion in five cities next week, and Mulally will be in New York for an event in Times Square. He is certain to get questions on his future plans from reporters.

Ford officials dismissed a Reuters report that said the board could keep Mulally on as nonexecutive chairman. Officials said it is highly unlikely that Mulally would agree to serve in the position after running the company since September 2006, when he came from Boeing.

Mulally declined to comment about succession plans when reached Wednesday by email. Fields also didn't comment this week on the issue.

At the company's annual meeting in May, Mulally didn't offer any timetable for leaving.

"We have a very robust succession plan," Mulally said. "The strength of the leadership and the succession plan bode well for continuing to profitably grow Ford."

In May, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. declined to talk about any timetable of when Mulally might step down and said the board is "more than happy" with Mulally.

He said the board routinely conducts contingency succession planning, but declined to elaborate.

"I, for one, would like to see him continue for some time," Ford Jr. said.

Mulally added: "Me, too."
