Washington ? Ford Motor Co.'s board of directors met Thursday to discuss the company's succession efforts, but plans no announcements, a company spokesman said.
The Dearborn automaker's 16-member board has been considering a plan to eventually replace Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally, 67.
Ford Americas President Mark Fields, 51, is the odds-on favorite, although the board has considered other candidates inside and outside the automaker.
"We have no planned announcements today regarding succession plans," Ford spokesman Jay Cooney said Thursday.
The board meeting lasted a few hours and wrapped up around noon.
Ford is launching its all-new 2013 Fusion in five cities next week, and Mulally will be in New York for an event in Times Square. He is certain to get questions on his future plans from reporters.
Ford officials dismissed a Reuters report that said the board could keep Mulally on as nonexecutive chairman. Officials said it is highly unlikely that Mulally would agree to serve in the position after running the company since September 2006, when he came from Boeing.
Mulally declined to comment about succession plans when reached Wednesday by email. Fields also didn't comment this week on the issue.
At the company's annual meeting in May, Mulally didn't offer any timetable for leaving.
"We have a very robust succession plan," Mulally said. "The strength of the leadership and the succession plan bode well for continuing to profitably grow Ford."
In May, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. declined to talk about any timetable of when Mulally might step down and said the board is "more than happy" with Mulally.
He said the board routinely conducts contingency succession planning, but declined to elaborate.
"I, for one, would like to see him continue for some time," Ford Jr. said.
Mulally added: "Me, too."
