Switchers lend a bipartisan sheen to a political party during the conventions, perhaps the most partisan affairs of the year. That's why Artur Davis will speak at the GOP convention, and Charlie Crist at the Democrats'.

Political conventions juggle two competing objectives: firing up the party faithful, and presenting an appealing face to undecided voters who are only beginning to tune in to the presidential race. This year's political conventions will both feature prime speaking roles for people who can help their parties achieve those dual goals: party switchers.

It?s OK, party switchers announce to the world, to change your mind and join the other team. For the home team, partisan defectors offer the fulfillment of a fantasy held by every die-hard politico since seventh-grade civics: convincing someone of another political persuasion to join your side.
For undecided voters, the switchers give a bipartisan sheen to a political party amid what is perhaps the most partisan affair of the year.
On Tuesday night, the GOP will feature former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama. Mr. Davis will take the podium just a few speakers before the much-heralded address of Mitt Romney?s wife, Ann, and the keynote speaker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
For Republicans, having Mr. Davis at their dais in 2012 is particularly sweet: He seconded Barack Obama?s nomination at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.
Davis was a conservative Democrat during his tenure in the House, where he was among those who voted against Mr. Obama?s signature health-care reform law. However, he all but abandoned the party after he came up short in the Democratic gubernatorial primary in his home state. ?
After Davis's speech, Republicans will lay on the ?it?s OK to change your mind? theme with a testimonial?video?about three voters who supported Obama in 2008 but have shifted to Mitt Romney in 2012.
But Republicans aren't the only ones getting in on the switcheroo fun. Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida endorsed Obama on Sunday and will speak at the Democratic National Convention next week.
And in the video tit for tat, the liberal "super PAC" Priorities USA released an advertisement featuring a Massachusetts small-business owner named Olive Chase, who supported Mr. Romney for governor but supports Obama for president.

Thousands were stuck in line in Newark airport Tuesday afternoon, after United Airlines experienced a system-wide computer outage.
Thousands of United Airlines passengers are?experiencing?flight delays and long lines nationwide after the system-wide network outage took the airline offline for at least two hours on Tuesday.
The Chicago-based airline confirmed the computer troubles on their official Twitter and Facebook pages Tuesday afternoon: "We have a network outage and are working to get systems back online. We'll update soon."
The FAA had ground stops for in-bound United flights at Newark, San Francisco and Houston airports, but it was later lifted.
"UAL's computer went down," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. "It's back up ... but the delays we're seeing are absolutely a United problem, not an ATC (air traffic control) issue."
Thousands of passengers were stuck in line at Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday afternoon, according to NBC News' Jason White, who was among the mass of travelers waiting in line.
The outage of the "SHARES" system affects things like reservations, ticketing and check-ins, which is critical for?boarding?passengers. The system is carried over from Continental Airlines. United adopted the reservation platform on March 3.
The airline's website was also down for a temporary period, but is now running again.
In a statement, United Airlines said it "is in the process of resuming normal operations following a temporary network outage that affected its airports and website Tuesday afternoon."
The carrier said it "apologizes for the disruption caused to travelers at affected airports," and is allowing customers on affected flights to cancel or rebook their itineraries without penalty.

Protein bars usually deliver more protein and contain less fat than candy bars. However, there is a Oxnard chocolate protein bar that is clearly superior. The Xocai Healthy Chocolate Protein bar has the greatest concentration of antioxidants of all protein bars sold in Point Mugu Nawc. And that?s not all. The Xocai bar is low-calorie, low fat, and high fiber.
Not all Xocai Protein Bar fans are hard-core athletes. It is a multi-purpose health bar enjoyed in different ways by different types of Oxnard MXI chocolate consumers. I have Oxnard Xocai clients who eat the Xocai Protein Bar as a low-calorie, high-energy, weight-loss bar. It tastes so much better than Slim Fast and NutriSystem.
Smart Port Hueneme parents keep Xocai Protein bars in the car for their children to snack on. Who says your kids have to eat low-fiber Goldfish crackers and high-sugar fruit snacks?
Some of my Point Mugu Nawc Xocai customers who leave the house in a rush eat the Xocai protein bar for their early morning meal. Most breakfast bars, granola bars, cereal bars, and fruit bars do not have enough protein to adequately replace a meal.
And it goes without saying that the Xocai Protein Bar is a wiser choice than doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, or croissants. Ditto for the Egg McMuffin, Burger Kings? Croissan?Wich, and Subway?s Cheese Breakfast Sandwich. (If you want to lose your appetite, read the fat, sodium, and calorie content information for these popular fast-food breakfasts.)

For some, bankruptcy is an easy way out. For others, it is the last resort they hoped never to come to. Because it is such a big deal in a person?s financial life, there have come to be a wide array of misunderstandings that go along with it. In recent years, several changes have taken place in how bankruptcy is filed, as well as how and what type of debts can be expunged using the bankruptcy process. One notable example is student loans. In order for student loans to be erased, you have to show that they present an ?undue hardship? under the law.
First off, bankruptcy doesn?t mean that you?re going to lose everything. This misconception may have more to do with ?Wheel of Fortune? or ?Monopoly,? but it isn?t reality. In most cases, bankruptcy liquidation means that extraneous things are sold off to pay your debts. Coin collections, art, antiques and furniture are typically attached, but not always, and then only under chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 13 is another beast all together.
Chapter 7 bankruptcy is total liquidation of assets under court order with exclusions. These exclusions are like an allowance given to you by the court that you can use to ?purchase? some of your possessions back from the bankruptcy sale. These might include your vehicle, tools that you work with, and even musical instruments. How much you can retain during bankruptcy proceedings is different in every state and can be subject to the discretion of the bankruptcy court. For example, in some states, law allows you to retain up to $3,500 for a vehicle. That means that if your car books for $3,000, you can keep it. If it is worth $4,000, then the car will be sold, you will be given $3,500, and your creditors will be given $500 toward your debt.
In Chapter 13, you may not have to give up anything that you own free and clear. Of course, Chapter 13 bankruptcy differs from Chapter 7 in that you do have to pay back your debts, but the payments on those debts are structured in such a way that you can, based on your current income, pay them off. While 7 is basically for those who have no way of paying their debts whatsoever, 13 is a restructuring of those debts to make them more manageable.
Declaring bankruptcy is no small matter, and should never be entered into lightly. The existence of a bankruptcy of any type on your credit report will negatively impact your credit rating for at least 10 years, meaning that loans you apply for will charge you higher interest rates, and you may not qualify at all for some forms of credit. It can impact your ability to get a job or to find an apartment, much less purchase a home. While it may seem like an easy escape from under a mountain of debt, it is critical that every other option is exhausted first. If you feel as though you have no other option but to file for bankruptcy, choose a legal professional who has a strong reputation within your community.
On Sept. 5,?Motorola and Verizon are holding an event at which?they're expected to announce the latest RAZR device. Thanks to an anonymous source, the cat's out of the bag about the new smartphone's?details.?
It will apparently be called the Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE.
Engadget's Brad Molen reports that the tech blog's staff has gotten its hands onto some photos of the awkwardly named device, along with its spec sheet.
The RAZR M will have a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED Advanced display, a dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage (which can be expanded, thanks to microSD support), an 8MP camera in the rear, a 3MP camera in the front, and NFC?capabilities.
No details about the device's expected price or release date are known at this point, so at least there'll be something new?that we can learn from the Sept. 5 event.

To cap or not to cap: Scientists find new RNA phenomenon that challenges dogmaPublic release date: 27-Aug-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Daniel Schoenberg Schoenberg.3@osu.edu 614-688-3012 Ohio State University
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Some RNA molecules spend time in a restful state akin to hibernation rather than automatically carrying out their established job of delivering protein-building instructions in cells, new research suggests.
And instead of being a fluke or a mistake, the research suggests that this restful period appears to be a programmed step for RNA produced by certain types of genes, including some that control cell division and decide where proteins will work in a cell to sustain the cell's life.
This could mean that protein production in cells is not as clear-cut as biology textbooks suggest, scientists say.
"This could mean there are more variations to the proteins in our bodies than we realize; it means that RNAs can be stored and reactivated and we don't know what biological process that affects - it could influence embryonic development, or neurological activity, or even cancer," said Daniel Schoenberg, professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry at Ohio State University and lead author of the study.
Schoenberg and colleagues discovered this phenomenon by tracing the origins of a cap-like structure on messenger RNA (mRNA) that is known to coordinate most of this RNA molecule's short life. Messenger RNA is manufactured in a cell's nucleus and each mRNA contains the instructions needed to produce a specific protein that a cell needs to live.
Until now, scientists have believed that once an mRNA is no longer needed to make protein, the cap comes off and the molecule is degraded, its job complete. But Schoenberg's lab discovered in 2009 that some mRNAs that were thought to be degraded were instead still present in the cell, but they were missing part of their sequence and had caps placed back on the newly formed ends. Because these mRNAs were in the cytoplasm, the changes had to happen there rather than inside the nucleus.
In this new study, the researchers were looking for further evidence of these apparent rogue mRNAs, but instead they found that a completely unexpected biological process occurs before some proteins are even a glimmer in a gene's eye: The uncapping and recapping of mRNAs outside the nucleus results from a cap recycling operation in the cell cytoplasm. This process appeared to enable certain RNAs to pause, without being degraded, before launching protein production.
"What this discovery tells us is a complete fundamental reworking of the relationship between a gene, messenger RNA and a protein. It's more complicated than we realize," Schoenberg said.
The research is published online in the open-access journal Cell Reports.
That fragments of mRNA could exist at all in the cell's main body was first reported by other scientists in 1992. Years later, Schoenberg asked a postdoctoral researcher in his lab to revisit these unexpected RNA fragments and confirm they exist. The postdoc's experiments showed that these mRNA, thought to be the dregs left over from their degradation, had caps on them - suggesting they still had the potential to function in protein production. Schoenberg, also director of Ohio State's Center for RNA Biology, has been investigating this cytoplasmic capping operation ever since.
In 2009, he and colleagues reported the discovery of two enzymes in the cell's main body that would enable mRNA capping to occur completely outside the nucleus and in the cytoplasm instead.
In the current studies, Schoenberg sought to determine the physiological significance of this capping operation. The researchers engineered a way to block cytoplasmic capping in cells in the lab and then looked at changes in more than 55,000 RNAs.
This interference with cytoplasmic capping revealed that two different types of pathways could exist in the cells - some mRNAs remained stable without their caps, while others without caps were rapidly destroyed. This finding indicated that mRNAs can lose their caps in the cytoplasm and at some point get recapped. With further experimentation, the researchers determined that only some mRNAs lost their caps in the cell body.
"It's not all of any particular message that's uncapped, just a portion of a message," Schoenberg said. "We wanted to show that we have uncapped RNAs in the cell and they are not degraded. It means they're stored that way."
This finding offered hints that there is a higher order to this phenomenon, and that some mRNAs purposefully rest in an uncapped state without being degraded by enzymes within the cell whose job is to remove them. It also suggested that as the capping circumstances change inside the cell body, signals from genes might undergo change that allows for two or more proteins, one being shorter than the other, to be made from the same mRNA.
"We have always thought that one gene would give an mRNA for one kind of protein. But what we have found makes us wonder if multiple proteins could be made from each of the messenger RNAs that undergo decapping and recapping in the cytoplasm," Schoenberg said.
The researchers used bioinformatics technology to determine which genes were manufacturing mRNAs that could exist in this uncapped and recapped state in the cytoplasm. These genes included those that control some of the most basic elements of cell survival: They determine the location of proteins and RNAs within the cell and, perhaps most significantly, the mitotic cell cycle - part of the process of cell division.
"It wasn't random. It was very specific," Schoenberg said. "There are specific families of mRNAs that are regulated in this way, and that has ramifications for how proteins are expressed and regulated."
As an example, he cited how neurons communicate messages across vast distances to other nerve cells. It is known that mRNAs are deliberately kept in a silent state while they travel from, for example, the spinal cord to the fingertip, where they are then activated to make new proteins.
"What would the condition be of the mRNA to keep it silent? The possibility is it doesn't have a cap on it, and if it doesn't, it can't be translated. Maybe cytoplasmic capping in neurons is a function that allows that message to be translated at just the right time," Schoenberg said.
Or, in the case of cancer: "What if one of the things that happens is you are making shortened proteins instead of full-length proteins and the regulatory part of the protein is missing in the shortened protein? If that's true, can you interfere with this process and interfere with malignancy as a result?"
For now, these scientists can only speculate about what this unexpected biological process really means. Schoenberg's lab plans to investigate the phenomenon more thoroughly in a line of breast cancer cells.

A cooking simulator under development in Japan allows people to experience the thrill of cooking even when their fridge is empty and their belly is?full. It might also help them hone their skills so they don?t overcook a pricey steak.
The simulator features a ?force feedback fry pan and spatula to accurately re-create the sense of cooking,? explains video news site DigInfo TV.?
The gadget is under development at the Tokyo Institute of Technology ?and includes a display to show the user visible changes to their food caused by heating. See a steak go from red to brown and carrots blackened to a crisp, for example.
In the future, researchers hope to pair the system with a meal you?re actually cooking so that it could help you forecast how long to leave your food in the pan by giving a virtual peek at your steak in five minutes and 10 minutes.?
Or, if you spend too much time cooking just for the pleasure of cooking, the simulator will let you have all the fun without any obligation to eat the meal you prepare.?

Healthy behaviours regarding alcohol, physical activity, vegetable intake and body weight reduce the risk of hypertension by two thirds, according to research presented at the ESC Congress today. The findings were presented by Professor Pekka Jousilahti from National Institute for Health and Welfare.
According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is the leading cause of mortality in the world, contributing annually to over 7 million deaths (about 15% of all deaths). Therefore, prevention of hypertension is essential to improving health and preventing morbidity and mortality, both in developing and developed countries.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether five major cardiovascular disease related lifestyle factors ? smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, obesity and consumption of vegetables ? predict the future increase of blood pressure and development of clinical hypertension, and need for antihypertensive drug treatment.
This large prospective population-based cohort study included 9,637 Finnish men and 11,430 women who were 25 to 74 years of age and free of hypertension during the baseline measurements (1982-2002). Healthy lifestyle factors were defined as: (1) not smoking, (2) alcohol consumption less than 50g per week, (3) leisure time physical activity at least 3 times per week, (4) daily consumption of vegetables, and (5) normal weight (BMI
Data on the development of hypertension during the follow-up period were obtained from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland register of people entitled to special reimbursement for antihypertensive drugs. During a mean follow-up of 16 years, 709 men and 890 women developed hypertension.
Smoking was omitted from the final analysis. Professor Jousilahti said: "Even though smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, it was not associated with the development of hypertension in our analyses, which is in accordance with previous studies."
The four remaining healthy lifestyle factors were included in the analysis. Hazard ratios for hypertension associated with adherence to 0 (the reference group), 1, 2, 3, and 4 healthy lifestyle factors were calculated after adjusting for age, year of entering the study, education, and smoking.
The hazard ratios for hypertension associated with adherence to 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 healthy lifestyle factors were 1.00, 0.74, 0.51, 0.34, and 0.33 for men, and 1.00, 0.89, 0.68, 0.41, and 0.37 for women. "The risk of hypertension was only one third among those having all four healthy lifestyle factors compared to those having none," said Professor Jousilahti. "Even having one to three healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension remarkably. For example having two healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension by nearly 50% in men and by more than 30% in women."
"Our analysis suggests that adherence to healthy lifestyle factors may have more of an impact on risk of hypertension in men than women," he added. "This could be because of the stronger association of obesity and alcohol consumption with the risk of hypertension in men than in women."
"Four modifiable lifestyle factors: alcohol consumption, physical activity, consumption of vegetables and keeping normal weight have a remarkable effect on the development of hypertension," said Professor Jousilahti. "Lifestyle modification has a huge public health potential to prevent hypertension. While our research suggests that lifestyle modification may produce greater reductions in hypertension in men than women, it also shows large benefits in women, and adherence to all four healthy lifestyle factors had a nearly similar effect in both sexes. Both men and women should take steps towards a healthier lifestyle to decrease their risk of hypertension."
He concluded: "Our study was focused on prevention of hypertension and therefore included subjects who did not have hypertension at baseline. But the results should apply to the treatment of patients with hypertension, who can reduce their blood pressure by modifying the four lifestyle factors alone, or by making these modifications while taking blood pressure lowering medication.
The Federal Aviation Administration will study one of the pressing issues of the post-industrial world ? will Alec Baldwin?s iPad bring down an airplane?
The FAA announced Monday that it?s creating a group of government and industry experts to look into the use of portable electronic devices aboard commercial airplanes.
?With so many different types of devices available, we recognize that this is an issue of consumer interest,? U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in the announcement. ?Safety is our highest priority, and we must set appropriate standards as we help the industry consider when passengers can use the latest technologies safely during a flight.?
How about cellphones, Ray?
?The group will not consider the airborne use of cell phones for voice communications during flight,? the FAA said in its release.
In general, airlines require passengers to shut off all electronic devices from the time the airplane leaves the gate until it reaches 10,000 feet. After that, airlines will let flyers fire up their devices, although mobile phones have to have their cellular phone capability shut off. At some point before landing, passengers have to shut off the devices.
The shutdown includes tablets like the one Baldwin used on an American Airlines flight and didn?t shut down as quickly before takeoff as flight attendants desired. He was removed from the flight.
And, even though passengers can?t use personal electronic devices at the beginning and end of flights, those tablets are in use in many cockpits as airlines and pilots replace paper manuals with electronic ones stored on the tablets.
?We?re looking for information to help air carriers and operators decide if they can allow more widespread use of electronic devices in today?s aircraft,? acting FAA administrator Michael Huerta said. ?We also want solid safety data to make sure tomorrow?s aircraft designs are protected from interference.?
Keep reading for the items for which the FAA/DOT is requesting comment.
? Operational, safety and security challenges associated with expanding personal electronic device (PED) use.
? Data sharing between aircraft operators and manufacturers to facilitate authorization of PED use.
? Necessity of new certification regulations requiring new aircraft designs to tolerate PED emissions.
? Information-sharing for manufacturers who already have proven PED and aircraft system compatibility to provide information to operators for new and modified aircraft.?
? Development of consumer electronics industry standards for aircraft-friendly PEDs, or aircraft-compatible modes of operation.?
? Required publication of aircraft operators? PED policies.
? Restriction of PED use during takeoff, approach, landing and abnormal conditions to avoid distracting passengers during safety briefings and prevent possible injury to passengers.
? Development of standards for systems that actively detect potentially hazardous PED emissions.
? Technical challenges associated with further PED usage, and support from PED manufacturers to commercial aircraft operators.
NASA infrared time series of Tropical Storm Isaac shows consolidationPublic release date: 27-Aug-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

NASA's Atmospheric Infrared Sounder or AIRS instrument is an infrared "eye" that flies onboard NASA's Aqua satellite. AIRS has been providing the National Hurricane Center with valuable temperature data on Isaac's clouds and the surrounding sea surface temperatures, and a time series of data shows that Isaac is consolidating.
The AIRS instrument has been monitoring Tropical Storm Isaac for several days. AIRS data from Aug. 24, 25, 26 and 27 showed Isaac's movements through the eastern and central Caribbean Sea, across eastern Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico. On Aug. 24, Isaac's strongest convection (rising air that forms the thunderstorms that make up a tropical cyclone) appeared all around the center, except in the western quadrant of the storm. On Aug. 25, when Isaac was affecting Haiti, it appeared more disorganized, and the strongest storms extended from southwestern Haiti into the central Caribbean Sea. On Aug. 26, AIRS data showed the area of strong convection had increased and the largest area was over the Florida Keys, with bands of strong thunderstorms extending over southeastern Florida and the Bahamas. On Aug. 27, Isaac's center of circulation appeared more rounded on AIRS imagery, indicating the circulation center was becoming more organized.
Southeasterly wind shear and the larger than average wind radii, and entrance of some dry air had been keeping Isaac from strengthening more quickly today, Aug. 27. That wind shear is the result of an upper-level low pressure area that lies southwest of Tropical Storm Isaac. As that low moves away and the wind shear lessens, Isaac will have more ability to strengthen.
Where is Isaac on Aug. 27?
At 11 a.m. EDT (1200 UTC) on Monday, Aug. 27, Isaac was a strong tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph (100 kmh). Isaac is expected to become a hurricane in the next day or two over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. When Isaac reaches maximum sustained winds of 74 mph, it will be classified as a category one hurricane. Isaac's cloud extent is about 480 miles in diameter, as tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 240 miles (390 km) from the center.
Tropical Storm Isaac was located about 250 miles (400 km) south of Apalachicola, Fla. and about 310 miles (500 km) southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. That puts Isaac's center near latitude 25.7 north and longitude 84.7 west. Isaac is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph (22 kmh) and the tropical storm is expected to continue on that track, but slow down before turning to the northwest on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The National Hurricane Center expects Isaac to move over the eastern Gulf of Mexico later today, Aug. 27 and approach the northern Gulf coast in the hurricane warning area on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) ? Too close to call indeed.
Track announcer Tom Durkin couldn't pick the winner of the $1 million Travers Stakes, and neither could anyone else when Alpha and Golden Ticket flashed across the finish line Saturday at absolutely the same time.
The photo finish sign went up immediately on the infield toteboard at Saratoga Race Course, and a few minutes later, the race was declared an official dead heat ? the first time the Travers wound up with two winners in 143 runnings dating to 1864.
"I thought we were beat at first, then I thought we won," said an ecstatic Ken McPeek, who trains 33-1 long-shot Golden Ticket. "I couldn't tell. I'm thrilled we finished in a dead heat."
It appeared Golden Ticket would be alone in the winner's circle as the field of 11 3-year-olds rounded the final turn and headed down the stretch on a hot and humid day. With David Cohen aboard, Golden Ticket moved inside and grabbed the advantage. But jockey Ramon Dominguez kept urging on 2-1 favorite Alpha, and the game colt trained by Kiaran McLaughlin caught his rival in the final stride.
The crowd of 46,528 roared, while McLaughlin and McPeek smiled and high-fived each other in the grandstand when the result was official.
"It's a dead heat but it goes in the 'W' column," said McLaughlin, who added a Travers win to his Alabama score last week with 3-year-old filly Questing. "It doesn't happen very often in a Grade 1, $1 million race, but we're all happy it happened today."
The 1874 Travers also ended in a dead heat, but Attila was declared the official winner after a runoff with Acrobat.
Fast Falcon, send off at 32-1, was a neck behind the winners in third place. Atigun, also trained by McPeek, was fourth, followed by Nonios, Neck 'n Neck, Stealcase, Speightscity, Liaison, Five Sixteen and Street Life. The winning time for the 1 1/4 miles was 2:02.74.
Alpha returned $4.10, $5.10 and $3.90, and Golden Ticket paid $26.80, $26.40 and $11.80. Fast Falcon, trained by Nick Zito, returned $13.60.
McPeek is familiar with pulling off upsets. In 2002, he won the Belmont Stakes with 70-1 shot Sarava, who spoiled War Emblem's Triple Crown bid. But he'll certainly share this win with a fellow trainer from Lexington, Ky.
"It would have been a heartbreaker for either one of us to lose," said McPeek, who decided on Tuesday to give Golden Ticket a chance in the Travers because several other options didn't pan out.
McPeek insisted Golden Ticket was training well, and would run a big race. McLaughlin felt the same way about his colt, who matched his sire Bernardini by completing the Jim Dandy-Travers double.
"We thought he would run great, and he did," said McLaughlin, who trains Alpha for Sheik Mohammed's Godolphin Racing.
This Travers may have been without the best of the 3-year-old bunch, including retired Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another and Belmont winner Union Rags, but it turned into a race for the record books. And it came on the 50th anniversary of another great finish ? in the 1962 Travers, Jaipur and Ridan dueled the entire race before Jaipur won by a nose.
As expected, Speightscity shot straight to the lead from the rail, with Stealcase second Alpha racing comfortably in third place. With a quarter mile to go, Golden Ticket took the lead, and Alpha moved up to second. With the crowd cheering as the two raced to the finish, Alpha closed ground steadily and Durkin shout from high atop the Spa that it was too close to call.
Dominguez didn't know who won, either.
"I don't think either of us really knew," Dominguez said, referring to Cohen. "When we both realized it was dead heat, we were pretty relieved and pretty happy at the same time."
Travers tradition calls for a canoe sitting in a lake in the infield to be painted in the winning colors. It now appears there will be two canoes.
"I'm wondering who gets the canoe, how they're going to paint it the canoe," said McLaughlin. "That's very important at this time."
Alpha came into the Travers off a win in the Jim Dandy, while Golden Ticket was a last-minute entry by McPeek and had won only one of nine career starts.
In earlier races:
? Willy Beamin ($24.80) ran down the leaders in the stretch for a surprising win in the $500,000 King's Bishop just three days after the colt trained by Rick Dutrow Jr. won the Albany Stakes.
? Even-money choice Contested ($4) took the lead with an eighth-mile to go after losing her footing at the start and won the $500,000 Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by two lengths over Gypsy Robin. Trained by Bob Baffert, Contested won for the fifth time in her last six starts.
? Zagora ($5) took charge in the final eighth-mile and won the $250,000 Ballston Spa for fillies and mares by 1 1/2 lengths over Hungry Island.
