Unnerving Instagram-Street View smashup built with best intentions

5 hrs.

"If you don't want it to be shared or seen by the entire world,"?Abe Stanway explains,?"you shouldn't share it with anyone at all." The 22-year-old?engineer is part of a small team that built a site which shows anyone exactly where an Instagram photo was taken.

The site, called the Beat, takes advantage of the Instagram and Google Street View application programming interfaces (APIs) in order to create a strange mashup of the two services. All a user has to do is search for a keyword and Beat will spit out results in the form of photos with geotags?? embedded geographic data?? and a look at the Google Street View location corresponding to that information.

Through some simple?keyword searches, I found that it's?possible to easily?discover where a girl with a large?pile of yet-to-be-opened gift boxes from Tiffany's resides, where a family is spending its summer vacation (and which hotel's bar the father favors), where a man with an impressive gun collection lives, and so on. Someone with a plan???malicious or otherwise???and some time on his or her hands can easily compile a wealth of data on strangers. (Is it any surprise that at least one tech reporter?has wondered if Beat is a "creepy" use of technology?)

Of course, what Beat does isn't an absolute novelty. In the past we've seen apps and services ? such as one named "Creepy"?or another dubbed "Please Rob Me"?? which easily gather?geographic data from services like Flickr, Twitpic, Instagram, Foursquare and so on.?Thanks to these apps and services, and smartphones which have the ability to add geotags to photos and social media posts, there's plenty of information lingering out there.

"People want to share, people sometimes want to share publicly," Mor Naaman, an?assistant professor at Rutgers University whose research group built Beat, told NBC News. "But they still want to retain privacy." He sounds certain that both desires can coexist.

Naaman's research group consists of?Abe Stanway (who also spoke with NBC News), Ian Jennings?and Jerry Reptak???current and former Rutgers University?undergrads. For them, Beat is just a small part of what Naaman describes as a "much larger project," one which focuses on collecting, organizing?and showing relevant information online.

"Social media forgets a lot about what's happening in real life, what's happening out there, what people do, what they care about," Naaman explains. Stanway says if aliens were looking at Earth or a city on Earth, "What would they want to know? [...] What would be their passport to figure it out?"

By giving photos context?? location?? Beat can show you the ... well, beat,?or rhythm,?of any place or topic.

As Beat flashes images of valuables and their locations across my screen, Naaman's words seem too gentle for the potential danger they convey.

"I?think people should continue to share," he says. "I think it's interesting and critical [...]?but I would also like them to think about the consequences."

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

This is the Modem World: Why I don't like lists -- a list

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World Why I don't like lists a list

It's both the end of one year and the beginning of another, and that means we're inundated with best-of, worst-of and something-of lists from all of our favorite -- like this one -- tech media outlets. I don't like lists.

But lists are useful. I've been guilty of making lists. They're nice ways to organize a year, and they get people talking about why X is No. 1 and Y is way down at the bottom. It brings out our inner fanboy, exposes us to products we wouldn't normally consider and makes for an easy reading experience.

Therefore, I present to you a list... about why I don't like best-of product lists.

Personal Finance Goals, Build Wealth

Have you made some personal finance goals for 2013 yet? If not, it?s not too late! And, yes, it is important to make them and write them down. Most people who have a goal and reach it only do so because they write it down somewhere. Writing it down, even if just on a napkin in a coffeeshop, makes you more accountable to it and makes you more likely to think about it, and therefore work toward achieving it.

You may be overwhelmed with a busy schedule, or have so many financial issues to juggle that you can?t get figure out where to start organizing your finances. Allow me to help. Following are five common goals that other people are striving to achieve this year; one or two might apply to your life, as well.

1. Create a new stream of income.

Things are tight for many people, but they don?t have to be. There are a variety of ways that you can get an extra stream of income flowing into your household. You might take on a second part-time job in the evenings or on the weekend. Better, you can learn to make money online by blogging, setting up Adsense site, selling your own product, or promoting other people?s products.

You might try your hand at network marketing, do some freelance writing, or turn a hobby into a side business.

//
//

2. Reduce your debt by a certain percentage.

If possible, make a goal to be out of debt by the end of the year. But that may not be realistic. In that case, sit down and do some number crunching. Could you reduce your debt by half by the end of the year? Twenty-five percent? Thirty? Figure out a reasonable expectation for your household debt reduction, and write it down.

3. Start a budget.

If you have not yet started to budget your money every month, this should be your number one personal finance goal. Budgeting allows you to have complete control of your money, such that you can end up with more extra at the end of each month. With this extra you can pay down more debt or save for that special luxury item.

4. Look for a new job.

Your current employer may not be paying you all you?re worth in the marketplace. Whether it?s because the company has had to cut back, or because your job doesn?t allow you to put all your skills and talents to good use, you might consider finding another one. But don?t go from bad to worse. Money isn?t the be-all-end-all when it comes to deciding on a job or career. Choose one that will not only pay you a decent wage, but also where you can be happy.

5. Start saving for a new car.

If you have been able to pay off your current car, use at least half of what you had been using for a car payment to save toward your next car. You may be planning on keeping your current car for the next ten years; that?s great!

But if you want true wealth, you don?t want to have to get into debt again the next time you need to buy a new car. Create a savings account specifically for your next car, and you will be able to pay for it in cash.

?

Starting the year with one or two personal finance goals firmly in your mind will do wonders for your wealth building and sense of financial peace. Don?t ignore this critical task. It may be worth thousands of dollars to you down the road.

Crockpot Pulled Pork + Beer Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwiches ...

I?m so ready to ring in 2013.

I have champagne and glittery tights and in about eight hours, I?m going to have HUGE hair. Huge. No really. Huge. I have a $33 bottle of hairspray to prove it.

Oh and I have pork. Seriously? 2013, bring it on.

Could a better recipe more perfectly wrap up 2012 on this wee blog? I think not. If I was obsessed with anything this year (and let?s be honest, I?m obsessed with EVERYTHING? I know you?re hoping that my resolution is to stop using the word ?obsessed.? For the third year in a row.), it was surely grilled cheese sandwiches. It started with the whole fruit and herb thing and then even morphed into? vegetables.

I must have had an off week.

So I don?t know why people eat pork on New Year?s ? I hear it?s good luck or something like that? ? but I eat pork all the time. Obviously. all.the.time. I wanted to do something slightly different than just a plain old sandwich or slider. Which is where the whole melty beer cheese thing comes in. And what?s better than buttery, crunchy, golden grainy bread? Nothing. That?s what.

The best thing about this ?recipe? is that you can totally just use what you have. Use whatever pork you have leftover; whatever pork you hijacked from your parent?s house in order to not have to cook for the next four days. You can even use whatever cheese is in your fridge. The only other things you really need are bread and beer, and well? if you?re reading this I?m guessing you most likely are in possession of such necessities.

That?s why we?re friends.

Crockpot Pulled Pork + Beer Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Yield: makes 4 sandwiches + a ton of pulled pork

Total Time: 12 hours for the pork; 30 minutes for the sandwiches

Ingredients:

pulled pork
1 (6 pound) pork butt/shoulder (mine was bone-in)
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
12 ounces of beer
32 ounces of barbecue sauce + additional for drizzling

grilled cheese sandwiches
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons flour
2/3 cup beer
1/3 cup milk
6 ounces freshly grated white cheddar cheese
8 slices slices whole grain bread
softened butter for spreading

Directions:

for pork:
Optional but yields the best result: heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add about 1-2 tablespoons olive oil. Sear the pork on every side (about 2-3 minutes per side) until golden brown before adding to the crockpot.

Add pork to crockpot with onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Add beer and 24 ounces of barbecue sauce. Cook on low for 12 hours, tossing once or twice if desired. After 8 hours, shred pork with forks or kitchen tongs and add remaining barbecue sauce. Toss pork to coat and let sit for 20-30 minutes before serving to absorb everything. Remove bone (if bone-in) before serving.

This makes a ton of pork and can be made well ahead of time and also frozen afterwards!

for sandwiches:
To make the beer cheese sauce, heat a small saucepan over medium heat and add butter. Once sizzling, whisk in flour and stir for 1-2 minutes until golden and fragrant and bubbly. Add in beer and milk, whisking well to combine, then reduce heat to low and add cheese, stirring until totally melted and smooth. Keep over low heat and stir every few minutes while assembling sandwiches.

Heat an electric skillet or griddle over medium heat. Butter the outside sides of each slice of bread. Place 4 slices butter-side down on the skillet, then top with a few handfuls of pulled pork. Cover in cheese sauce, then top with the other slices or bread, butter-side up. I cooked these grilled cheeses a lot quicker than the others I usually make since the cheese is already melted. As long as the pork and cheese sauce is warm, cook these until each side is deeply golden and crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Serve immediately!

Do it up big tonight, friends! I?m talking sweatpants? couches? the works.

A blood clot's danger depends on where it is

Blood clots like the one that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is being treated for following her recent concussion can occur for a host of reasons. How serious a clot is depends on where it is and why it formed, doctors say. A Clinton aide would not say where hers is located.

WHAT THEY ARE: Blood pools and thickens into a clot after an injury or because of a heart problem, clogged arteries or other condition. Clots also can break off and travel to another part of the body.

WHERE THEY OCCUR: In leg veins (called deep vein thrombosis) or in blood vessels in the neck, brain or lungs. Leg clots are a common risk after someone has been bedridden. Clots are most dangerous when they travel to the lungs, a potentially life-threatening situation, or to the brain, where they can cause a stroke.

RISK FACTORS: High blood pressure, diabetes, birth control pills, pregnancy, stroke, recent surgery, prolonged sitting, circulation problems and heart problems ? especially an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation ? raise the chances of developing a blood clot.

TREATMENT: Sometimes a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin) is prescribed to allow the clot to dissolve by itself over time and prevent new ones from forming.

Multiplayer confirmed for Tomb Raider reboot - Video Games ... - Digit

Crystal Dynamics global brand director Karl Stewart has confirmed on Twitter that the Tomb Raider reboot will feature multiplayer and the details can be found in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine. The magazine, which is of course not officially available in India but subscribers in the US, will get their hands on it on the 8 January. So gamers will have to wait until then for the complete low down.

The Twitter post says, ?OK, so after all the speculation..yes it's true. http://www.oxmonline.com/our-next-issue-tomb-raider-gets-multiplayer ? Check out @OXM for all the info on @tombraider's new multiplayer?

The move for adding multiplayer to this franchise will arouse some fan hate as well as praise. In the past when Naughty Dog announced that Uncharted 2 would be getting Multiplayer, fans thought it would be an afterthought and wouldn?t hold much ground. But the multiplayer was a success. The same can be said for the Assassin?s Creed franchise when multiplayer was introduced.

At E3 2012, we also got a glimpse of God of War Ascension but to our surprise, it wasn?t the single player that was debuted, but the multiplayer. We have had some hands on time with the multiplayer beta of God of War and we must say, it is a refreshing change. So who knows, maybe the multiplayer of Tomb Raider wont disappoint us in the way that the multiplayer of Far Cry 3 did. But we?re just keeping our fingers crossed.

Recently, Crystal Dynamics releases Tomb Raider 'Guide to Survival' preview. It shows off some of Lara?s abilities and the weapons and equipment she will be able to wield in the game. You can take a look at the details of her guide to survival here.

Tomb Raider will hit store shelves on March 5, 2013 for the Xbox 3560 and the PS3. What do you think? Will the multiplayer of Tomb Raider rise or will it crash and burn? Let us know in the comments section below.
